What credentials should you look for in a dental implant practitioner?

Q. I have read posts in the past and other things on the internet where you are advised to choose dentists who have years of exeperience with dental implants and are well renouned for this, but how can a patient come about this information? Should a dentist have it on their site or is there some other resource patients can attain this information through?
A. Things you should be looking at are
1. what form of postgraduate training the dentist has done in implantology. Unfortunately there are many colleagues of mine who have done a msc or a diploma and have only placed a few implants. Therfore this is  only one of the things you should be looking at.
2. most importantly how many implants has the dentist placed. I personally feel the more you do over the years the more experienced the clinician is.
3. ask to look at photos of previous cases
4. some of my patients have asked to speak to patients who had dental implants
5. How many years has the dentist been placing implants and restoring them.

I hope this is helpful!

Is it normal for jaw to ache after dental implant?

Q. I know that the gums are supposed to be sore and sensitive as they are right around the area where the procedure was performed, but is it normal for there to be an ache in the jaw as well? I got my dental implant in my lower teeth and i can definately feel a soreness in my jaw around this area?
A. It depends when it was placed. 2 weeks soreness is not unusual, ask your dentist to check it if not.

Why is dental implant causing me speech problems?

Q. I had a dental implant crown just over a year ago, but have developed problems with my speech since having it which i hoped would go away but have not. Do you over this has happened to any other patients, or am i jsut unlucky? I have got an appointment next week to get it checked out and hopefully sorted, but do you know what the problem may have been?
A. without seeing you it is impossible to say why this is happening. you are doing the right thing by going back to have it checked, if there is no joy from that then you may have to consider a second opinion or a referral to somebody who can help you.

Are dental implants abroad a safe option?

Q. Woudl you be able to tell me whether it is a safe option to get dental implants abroad, or whether there is too much risk involved in this. Some people I know have had great results from going abroad for dentistry but I have read of horror stories in the news on occasion and on the internet?
A. You have sort of answered your own question. We only really see the horror stories but I am sure some people get good results.

What time recovery time is needed after dental implant?

Q. Is it necessary to take a day off work for the dental implant procedure or would I be able to battle through the rest of the day once the treatment is complete?
A. it all depends on the complexity of the procedure and the type of person you are. As a guide the after effects should be no worse than a simple tooth extraction

Can you have dental implants once gum disease is under control?

Q. Last year I was diagnosed as having gum disease. I am now starting to get the condition under control and would really like to get dental implants. Is it possible to get dental implants after having gum disease?
A. yes, but the disease needs to be 100% under control as unfortunately implants are still suseptable to gum disease much the same as your original teeth

What to do if gum bleeds when cleaning dental implant?

Q. I have had Nobel All on 4 implants.Three have done very well but the forth one on the right side has given me trouble , the gum is quite sore and seems to have grown up the side of the implant, and when i clean my implant the gum bleeds. I have been back to my implant dentist, and he said I should see a periodontal person, because he does not do gum surgery which he thinks I might need, could you please advise me in this matter.
A. I would go back to him and ask him to either rectify the problem or recommend/refer you to someone who can sort this out.

Does smoking damage dental implants?

Q. Does smoking have any negative affectsa on dental implants like discolouring, or is there nothing to worry about?
A. Smoking has a negative effect on wound healing, long term gum health as well as it discolours your teeth/ implants.

It is not a contraindication for treatment with dental implants but is associated with a greater rate of complications and lower success survival rates.

What are dental implants made of?

Q. Would you please be able to tell me what dental implants are made of? Is there any chance that they may contain dangerous properties?
A. Implants are made of Titanium which has been shown to be very sfae over a 40 year period. Titanium is the only metal that does not get rejected by the body, in fact the bone sticks to the titanium of the implant
