Do steroids affect dental implant success?

Q. Hi, I have been told I may need dental implants in 6 months or so and have read steroids may affect the implant success, which type of steroids do this? as I use an asthma inhaler and had to have a small course of anabolic steroid pills to help with a leg ulcer I had last year. Thank you Mr Paul Wing
A. You may need the steroids topping up prior to treatment but you should ask you dentist and GP before the surgery to place the implant

Replacements available for missing teeth due to gum disease?

Q. Hello I have to get all my teeth remove due to gum diease. what would be the beat way to replace them and due to the large ammount of money it would cost would it be possible to just remove the really loose ones and do it in stages? thank you
A. hi many thanks for your email, the best option would be to remove the teeth and so remove the cause of the gum disease. you could then have your teeth replaced with just dentures first. then stage this to maybe place two implants in each jaw and fix these to the dentures. then place maybe another two implants and then replace the denture for a fixed bridge on four implants. this way staging the cost as well.  hope this is helpful.

What material is used in dental implants?

Q. What materials are used in a dental implant? Are they completely safe, nothing like the mercury in the older type of fillings?

How long do dental implants last for?

Q. Are dental implants more longer lasting than the other options for missing teeth like a dental bridge? How long is the life of an implant expected to be?
A. When having a bridge you have to remove tooth substance , therefore effecting the prognosis of the teeth. Implants have a life span of approximately 10 to 15 years but can last longer if looked after and seeing the hygienist regularly.

Should I be concerned that implant is still bleeding?

Q. I got a dental implant in a tooth to the back of my mouth in my upper jaw. I have had it for about a month now and the bleeding had stopped. Now, today when I cleaned my teeth I found that there was some blood. I was gentle with the area. Should I be concerned that there is still blood coming from this area?
A. hi many thanks for your email, i think it would be best to seek advice from your dentist so he or she can just check to make sure everything is ok. hope this is helpful.

How long will I have to stop smoking fordental implant?

Q. How long will I ned to stop smoking for the whole dental implant prodecure to make sure the thing is a success? Will chewing gum be a good alternative or will this be difficult when the implant is first put in?
A. i always prefer my patients to stop smoking for several months before placing implants, as this decreases the success rate. Also remember if you continue to smoke after this, it may affect the prognosis.

Will I be okay for braces even thoguht I have dental implant?

Q. I have had a dental implant for around a year now and have no problems with it. I would really like to sort out the rest of my teeth by getting them straightened, but have heard that getting braces is not possible if you have a dental implant. Can you please tell me if this is true, or if there is a particular type of braces that are good when there are implants involved?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the issue is the implant will not move with braces. so if the teeth that need straightening will require the implant to also move then this should not be done. however if the implant is not involved with the straigthening then there is no reason why this is not possible.

Q. Is it necessary to make any adjustments to diet after getting the dental implant. I know at first I will need to be careful when the implant is healing but what about after that. Can I have a normal diet?

What to do after dental implant procedure?

Q. What sort of behaviour and activity should I refrain from when I have finally got my dental implant put in? I guess football, a pint and kebab are off the menu for a short time?
A. hi many thanks for your email, on the day of the dental implant placement my advice would be to take it easy, but after the first few days you can then carry on with excercise and other activities.

food and drink should be kept light on the day but after all healing is taking place well there is no reason why you cant eat and drink what you like.

the main thing is to keep the area clean and free from infection while its healing.

hope this is helpful.

Can I not get implants until gum disease is sorted?

Q. My dentist said that I will not be able to get dental implants until my gum disease is sorted out completely? How will he know when it is okay and I can go ahead?
A. Your dentist is right in that your gum health has to be stable before implants can be placed. If you have gum disease then your dentist will have to clean them and once they are stable (which he will know), then you may have implants
