Will I need bone graft if I opt for implants?

Q. When I was 12 I had a front tooth ( # 8) removed due to an accident that occured when I was 7. At the time I was to young to get an implant. Since then I have worn a flapper or flipper (I am not sure what it is called.) Now I am 22 and I am thinking about getting an implant. Is it still possible for me to get an implant. If possible will I have to get a bone graft. what is the average US price for an implant?
A. I am not based in the US so have no real idea what is the average cost for a dental implant. Without a consultation it is hard to be didactic about your options, but you should be able to have a dental implant and may need to have grafting, situation dependent.

My dentist has recommended implants over bridges but why?

Q. My dentist has strongly said to me that bridges are a bad idea as they cause too much strain to be places on surrounding teeth. He has advised me to get dental implants but I can’t help but wonder if the guy is trying to get all my money. What would you say about this?
A. Hi thanks for your question.

It’s very difficult to say without having a full comprehensive examination of your dental health.

Essentially a bridge relies on the 2 teeth at either end to support it.  If these are “Virgin” ie untreated healthy teeth then they will have to have part of the tooth removed for the bridge to bond and attach to the tooth.  If the tooth has been weakened by previous treatments such as large crowns, fillings or root canal treatments then using it as a bridge support (pontic) could place stresses on the tooth.

There are many factors to consider; how big is the gap? where in the mouth?

Dental Implants can be used to support bridgework without using any of the surrounding teeth.  The implants themselves, act in a similar way to your natural tooth roots.

I hope that this answers your query.

Regards.

How long after gum disease is stable can I get implants?

Q. My dentist diagnosed me with gum disease not long ago and this is after some teeth had already fallen out. I had not been to the dentists for a while due to my fear of the dentists. My gum disease is beginning to get under control and my dentist has said I will be able to get implants following this. How long after gum disease is under control can i get them, and what should i do to make sure this problem does not happen again?
A. Once the gums are stable implants could be placed. To make sure it doesn’t happen again see your dentist and Hygienist on a regular 3-6 monthly basis

What test are used to see if I can have implants?

Q. What kind of xrays and tests are used to see if i can go with imaplts. for some reason i am always quite scared when i have these kind of things so i am hoping this kind of this is limited or not even necessary!
A. Hi.

Thanks for your question.

Dental x-rays are an essential part of the treatment planning and surgical process for dental implants.  This allows the dentist to asses the amount of bone that is available for the implant, and during the surgical appointments ensure that the implant is placed in the correct position.

Some patients may require a CT Scan which allows the dentist to see a 3d representation of the bone and for the lower jaw one of the nerves that passes through it.

The good news however is that many practices now use digital radiography which is a significantly lower x-ray doseage.  And for CT Scans some practices will use a ConeBeam CT scanner which has been specifically developed for dentistry and again is a much lower radiation dose than a traditional hospital CT scan.

Dental professionals will only take x-rays or scans where clinically necessary to avoid any unecessary exposure.  If you are going to another practice then it’s often a good idea to get copies of any x-rays you may have recently had taken.

I hope that this helps.

Kind Regards

Has dentla implant treatment hit a nerve?

Q. I had five implants in my lower jaw in November 2009. I am 60 and was told that because of the bone atrophy of 38 years, my jaw was like that of a 90 year. During the surgery with implant “B” my left arm and left leg came flying up in the air which of course frightened the Surgeon as well as the patient . I had no contol over that motion as a nerve had been struck. That implant came loose and had to be replaced five weeks later. When the freezing needle was inserted the nerve again was hit causing the same reaction. Since then I have been having excruciating pain in my right shoulder blade, shoulder and arm.Sometimes in all three locations or it can be in either the arm or shoulder or shoulder blade. Is this something that will eventually clear up? Is the Implant on the nerve? Meds and hot baths and exercises as well as prayer help temporarily-but what is the big picture. A few minutes on the computer intesifies the pain and that is even with using my left hand.Even driving antagonizes it. Has anyone else experiened this, as I somehow don”t believe this is an isolated case.
A. I suggest that you discuss this with your surgeon and maybe ask for a referral to a neurologist. It sounds unusual and I have not had any experience of this in 15 yrs of experience in implant dentistry.

A tooth has not fully erupted – can I get an implant?

Q. I am twenty and only now one of my baby teeth fell out. Underneath is the adult tooth which has shown no signs of coming through after a year. Would I be okay to go with implants or what can be done?
A. you need a consultation as the tooth may be ankylosed (stuck) or it may be able to be pulled into place by braces

otherwise if it is stuck then it will need to be removed and probably grafted before placing an implant
