Are there any alternatives to bone grafting?

Q. If a patient is unable to or unwilling to use bone from another part of their body to perform the implant procedure, are there any alternatives available. I need an implant and have been told I need bone grafting but I don’t think I can go through it. The very thought puts me on edge. Are there any alternatives?
A. Yes, but really for smaller defects. You can use a technique known as Guided bone regeneration using artificial bone usually derived from an animal source such as a cow or pig. This works very well for smaller defects. However, if a graft from your own bone is essential then you could consider having it carried out under sedation to help you feel more relaxed.
