I need dental treatment but can’t afford more than £2500. Can you advise?

Hello doctor, I live in aberdeen. I am forty and I work in the NHS. I have a couple of irregular teeth in my lower jaw, which makes me a bit definsive and affects my confident in a negative manner. To a great extent, I am concerned about this and have had an impact on my confidence. Is there a solution for this now..or a range of options from the dental treatments? it would be really great if you could give me a bit on information about what is available out there in terms of treatment and for someone only able to afford £2500 worth of treatment. Is it possible to get orthodontic braces if you have dental implants?

Can orthodontic braces be used even if the person has dental implants in place of missing teeth? I have two implamts on my top jaw, after losing them due to an accident some time ago. They sit next to my two front teeth, which are what I would like to have corrected as they stick out horribly, drawing unwanted attention and comments all the time and just making my feel very self-conscious about how I look. Although I really want to have them straightened, I also do not want to risk the health of my two implants that have proved good so far, so do you think it is possible to have the Inman aligner without causing any damage? I had two veneers fitted in March 2011, recently one flipped off and the surgery refuse to replace it, what should i do?

Dear Dr Moore,

I had two porcelain veneers fitted in March 2011 at a cost of £900. Last Thursday one flipped off and I returned to the dentist where I was told by that they could fix it but I would need to contact the dentist who fitted the veneer (he no longer works at the surgery) to get it replaced. She said that as he fitted the veneer it’s his responsibility to fix it. I questioned this as it seemed unreasonable as I had the treatment at the surgery, not through the dentist privately. The owner of the surgery then said that ‘these things happen’ and he wouldn’t be able to replace the veneer for free. Having paid out £900 and being told at the time the veneers would last between 8-10 years this doesn’t seem right.

The fixed veneer has now flipped off again after being bonded back on so it clearly needs a more long term resolution.

Can you please tell me what you think I am entitled to as a patient? I feel that if I bought a TV and it broke within 18 months I would be covered by a guarantee so surely the same is the case for veneers?

I am suffering from TMJ as a result of braces treatment gone wrong. Can you advise?

I am currently wearing braces and have 4 missing teeth due to extractions. My bottom teeth were straight but in my opinion after treatment with braces they are now more worser. i have been told that i will have implants on the NHS, but my treatment has been ongoing for years and now i have been told that i will have another minimum of 2 yr before completion. I also have developed TMJ symptoms, due to the reposition of my bite, but although the dentist and consultants aknowledge this they do not refer me to a maxillofacial surgeon, which is only 1 floor below them in the hospital. I do not understand why this is? There are now moments where i am being told that i will recieve an appojnment by letter but none arrive, for months until i enquire over the phone. i feel that i am being neglected and on top of all that more damage is done to my teeth than is good. I am going to complain to the PCT and the chief executive of the hospital. i would however like advice on what i should do to help my TMJ. and if i can be referred to another dentist which can carry out my work under NHS funding?,
