There’s A Crack In One Of My Dental Implants. Should I Go Back To My Dentist To Get It Looked At?

February 3rd, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Fahey, I’m wondering if you can help me. I have two implants that are around a year old. They have been perfect for me up until a couple of days ago. I was eating a boiled sweet and crunched it against one of my implants. At the time I didn’t notice anything but it appears that there is a slight crack in the implant. It hasn’t caused any issues so far, however I don’t want it to in the future. Do you think it will be fine or should I head back to my dentist to get it checked out? What could potentially happen? Look forward to hearing from you, thanks.

How Much Would A Single Tooth Replacement And Teeth-Whitening Treatment Cost?

February 2nd, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr. Fahey, I’m wondering if you could help me. I am looking for a single tooth replacement and teeth-whitening treatment. Can you tell me how much that would cost? Thank you. I fell and knocked the tooth out, and the tooth next to it is a little chipped too, at the very front of my mouth to the left.
I am so conscious of it that I don’t smile. I don’t believe the NHS will be able to help me, so I really hope you can.

I’m 48. Am I Able To Have Dentures Fitted At This Age?

February 1st, 2015
Q.

Hi Dr. Fahey. I have gum disease and my current dentist said I can’t have dentures or plates fitted where my missing teeth are. This is a problem as I’m very self-conscious when smiling. My dentist said I’m unable to have existing front teeth taken out to have dentures as I’m only 48. I’m worried that I’ll never be able to smile properly. Will I ever be able to have dentures? I’d be grateful if you could advise me.

My Dental Implant Crown Keeps Coming Loose. Have You Ever Heard Of This Happening?

January 19th, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Fahey, I hope you can help me. My dental implant crown has come loose 4 times in the last year and the screw has been tightened each time which only lasts a few weeks at a time. Have you ever heard of this happening? Twice it has happened while I was flossing under it. It doesn’t hurt at all, it’s just the crown is coming loose which worries me. Any advice? Can we glue that screw in there? My dentist is considering ordering some new part but he told me he has never seen this before. Thanks.

I Have Recently Had A Bridge Attached To My Implants And I’ve Developed A Lisp. How Long Will It Take To Go Away?

January 3rd, 2015
Q.

Hi Dr Fahey. I have recently had a bridge attached to my implants. I had a denture of four teeth replaced after 40 years. I have an awful lisp and I can’t see it going. I know it will take time for me to get used to the difference of how the teeth feel as opposed to my dentures but at the moment all I can feel is this thick block in my mouth and my tongue feels it has no room in my mouth! How long am I likely to have this lisp and should the bridge feel that thick at the back of it? Thank you for your time, I hope you can help me by offering some advice.

My Mum Has Severe Dry Mouth Symptoms After Having All-On-4 Implants. Why Has This Happened?

December 10th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Fahey,

My Mum recently had the 4 dental implant treatment. Initially she was delighted with the results and how great they look but unfortunately she’s now experiencing severe dry mouth symptoms and the implants have begun to discolour. Her dentist has said that it is not due to the implants and that he’s never had a patient to complain about dry mouth before. He had to replace the bottom implants due to the discolouration and it looks like he’s going to do the same with the top set. Could he have damaged a nerve going to the saliva gland during the insertion procedure? I think the lack of Saliva is causing the discolouration but surely he would know this. Any advice on how to proceed?

Regards.

My Mum Has Got Pain In Her Gums. Is There Any Chance Food Could Be Trapped Under Her Implants?

November 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Fahey, my mum got implants a few years ago but she is getting pain on the top front teeth (first 6). Her gum line is red and there is a high temperature. What could have resulted in this? Is it dangerous? Does she need to go back to the dentist or does she have to use cream to relieve the pain. As I mentioned she had the implants done probably around 2 years ago. Is it possible for the teeth to have moved out of place, because she is worried whether they have moved and food has gone to the gums and she is scared this might result to an infection. She has had this for about a month. Thank you for taking your time to read my message, I hope you have time to respond. Thank you.

Does Bone Grafting Work As I Need A New Implant To Replace An Old One?

November 13th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr. Fahey, I am 55 year old male, non-smoker and in good health.
I have a 23 year old front tooth implant which has a small bone loss and is sensitive due to some gum exposure. My dentist says bone and gum grafting will help. But I read that it is either not possible or success rate is non-existant. Is there a rough success rate percentage anywhere I can look before making decision?
I don’t know the make or model of the implant but 23 years ago there were probably only a few around. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

In The Last Two Weeks I Have Noticed A Spot Where An Infection Is Draining. My Practice Is No Longer In Business What Should I Do?

November 2nd, 2014
Q.

I have an implant on my right front tooth and this has been in place for 8 years. Recently the implant has moved (I have noticed a gap in my teeth which was not there before) although it is not loose. Also in the last 2 weeks I have had a small spot above the tooth which my dentist tells me is where an infection is draining. My dentist has advised me to contact the dentist who did the implant as she is unsure what treatment if any is needed. The practice that fitted the implant is no longer in business so I am a little stuck. I am reluctant to just call any implant specialist as I have had some very bad experiences with dentist which has lead me to have to have an implant in the first place so don’t want to get my fingers burnt again and be presented with a high bill which is unnecessary. Hope you can help.

I Cut My Gum A Year Ago But Now It’s Very Sore. How Can I Get Financial Help To Fix This?

October 16th, 2014
Q.

After cutting my lower gum on a French stick a year ago it overgrew as it healed. It’s very sore when biting into any toast. My dentist said I just have to put up with it but it is impossible to brush near it and it has worsened now. Would a gingivectomy help? Can I get periodontist help through the NHS? It is making me miserable when I eat. I never had any fillings or gum trouble before and I have seen my dentist for two 6 monthly check ups and both times he’s said there is nothing he can do. Without my dentist’s help, how would I get an NHS referral? I imagine privately will be very expensive.
