Should I consider implants instead of a dental bridge?

Q. I have a temp bridge after root extraction, but the prep has broken & now needs root filling. Should I consider implants instead?,
A. You would need to discuss with your dentist what he or she feels may be the best long term prognosis for the tooth. It may be the root filling will save the tooth.

Would it be a good idea for my 78-year old mother to go ahead with dental implants?

Q. Hello, this is a question for my 78 year old mother. She\’s had dentures in since she was very young and had several replacements throughout her life. She is looking for a more permanent solution but is frightened that her age and fragility is going to get in the way of treatment. She also has type 2 diabetes and anaemia. What do you think Dr? Would it be a good idea for her to have the implants or can you recommend anything else? Thank you, Melinda.,
A. Thanks for your question. Your mother would really need to have a consultation to determine if dental implant treatment would be an option. The amount of bone would need to be assessed as over time this shrinks. Your mother\’s general health would also need to be taken into account.

My dentist isn’t certain if I should have a bone graft or not, what should I do?

Q. Hi, I have had x-rays, ct scan and the thickness of my bone measured. I have been told that I should not need a bone graft but he could not say for certain until he opens up the gum, is this true? I thought these tests would prove whether bone grafting is required or not. As when he opens up gum and procedes if he said it is required the the price rises alot.,
A. Unfortunately even with the aid of diagnostic imaging it\’s not possible to be 100% certain. The use of a CT-Scan gives a better indication of the amount of bone available for placing the dental implants. Regards.

I’ve been recommended dental implants but don’t want to go ahead with surgery, what should I do?

Q. i had mini implants to hold my denture in place but 2 of them have cracked and now my denture has fallen out and can\’t stay in. My dentist has said i\’d be better with dental implants but i don\’t want to go ahead with any surgery like that, i have a phobia of the dentist already. Are there any alternatives in my case?,
A. It\’s difficult to advise you without a thorough consultation. Generally if the mini-implants have not been successful then conventional implants are often an option. Or the other option would be to have conventional denture made. Regards

Would gum graft fix recession, which was caused by gum disease?

Q. I have some recession (2/3mm) on one of my canine teeth. It doesn\’t notice when I smile but I am aware of it… How much would it cost to have a gum graft on this tooth? Or are there any alternatives? By the way the recession was due to gum disease which I have now had treatment for and my gums are much healthier. I\’m 27 years old.,
A. You would need to visit a dentist who has an interest in treating aesthetic cases. They would be able to give you an indication of prices and the procedure involved.

Why do prices of different implant types vary so greatly?

Q. I have 3 crown & posts in my front top teeth which my dentist tells me won\’t last forever as they are on the thickest post possible now. What sort of implant would you suggest and why do the prices vary so much between £700 – £3000 per implant. Kind regards ,
A. Thanks for your question. The type and size of implants used would be decided upon after a consultation and takes into account the amount of bone available, the number of teeth to be replaced and where in the mouth. The fee for implants can vary widely and will be influenced by the quality of the materials the dentist uses and the level of training they have and their team. It\’s also important to check what the price covers as some practices will give a price for the implant but not the restoration (crown or bridge) and this can have a bearing on the price.

How do I find a good reliable dentist to carry out the procedure I require?

Q. O have a number of double teeth missing on the upper and lower jaw. I also have a crown which I think is getting loose so feel implants would be a good idea. How do I find a good reliable dentist to carry out the procedure?,
A. Finiding a dentist to carry out your implant treatment is a very personal process. You could look at the find a dentist section of this site. If you know of anyone else that\’s had treatment done then ask them if they were happy with their dentist? Ask what qualifications the dentists have and what training they have had in dental implants as this can vary widely.

Would it be worth getting a mini implant to replace my dental bridge?

Q. I have been attending the glasgow dental hospital for the past year since my bridge fell out. I was hoping to get an implant but the space is too small for this. therefore I am getting a bridge. However, I would much prefer something more permanent and wondered if it would be worth looking into getting a mini implant through a private practice. Since I was born without this tooth I am entitled to free treatment through the NHS but the process has taken a considerable amount of time and I am eager to get a permanent resolution rather than another bridge. They have not mentioned a mini implant so not sure if this is not available through the NHS. to be honest the whole process has been a nightmare and I would really like a permanent solution that is not too costly as I am only 21 years old.,
A. Thanks for your question. If the space is too small for an implant then a bridge is usually an option. Another option that may be available to you is to consider orthodontic treatment to make the space larger to enable a dental implant to be placed. It\’s diffiuclt to say if this would be available on an NHS basis, you would need to discuss that with the team carrying out your treatment. If you have concerns about how your treatment is progressing disucss these with the dentist who I\’m sure will be happy to discuss any questions.

Can you give me some advice about how to go about being put to sleep to have a tooth removed?

Q. Hello, Please can you give me some advice about how to go about being put to sleep to have a tooth removed. Since i was 7 and the dentist took my tooth out which wasnt nessacary i have the worst fear of the dentist. I need a root canel on one of teeth at the back but as my fear is so bad i have left it for 5 years, i keep getting infections and have a permant absese on my gum. I was chewing a chewing gum and half of my tooth snapped off. I braved going to the dentist today which i must add was disgusting and the dentist just pulled the equipment out of a wooden draw, no gloves on etc, and said he would remove the that was snapped. He now says i will have to have a root canel or have the tooth removed. However i cannot face going to the dentist to have this procedure unless they will put to me sleep. Please can you advise how/ if i go about getting it removed whilst being put to sleep. Thank you,
A. I\’m sorry to hear that you are anxious about dental treatment. It\’s extremely rare to have a general anaesthetic \”be put to sleep\” for dental treatment. There are however other methods of sedation that may help you deal with the anxiety. Discuss these with your dentist or ask to be referred to a dentist who has a special interest in dealing with anxious patients.

My teeth fell out, can I sue my dentist?

Q. i had two crowns on a plate which was placed inside my upper mouth several weeks ago. both of the implants have fallen out and they were brand new. can i sue my dentist? i\’m not happy with the treatment and i paid a lot of money, i am a private patient.,
A. If you are unhappy with your treatment then the first thing to do is speak to the dentist who carried out your treatment or someone else at the practice. If you remain disastified then you can consider discussing the matter with the Dental Complaints Service.
