Filling has come out on root canalled tooth and dentist says I now need an implant. Is this normal?

Q. 2 years ago I had a root canal done on my top left tooth (no 5 I think). Since then the filling has come out and the tooth has broken, Now my dentist is telling me I will have to pay for an implant. I want to know is it normal for this sort of thing to happen and shouldn\’t the tooth have been capped or anything when the root canal was done?,
A. Hi There are always risks with all dental treatmnets and unfortunately these problems can occur. It is hard to comment further because i do not know the history of the treatment
