I don’t understand how the implant is placed. Can you explain it for me please?

Q. I don\’t understand how an implant is placed. Does the dentist replace the root also? Or does it go directly into the jaw bone? Can the root of the tooth be re-made rather than having to go through bone grafting etc etc?,
A. Hi thanks for your question. Dental implants typically consist of 3 main parts; the dental implant, abutment and crown. The dental implant is placed directly into the jaw bone and takes the place of the tooth root. The abutment and finished crown then are placed and give the finished tooth. In some cases there is not enough bone available in the jaw to place a dental implant and in these cases bone augmentation is required. I hope that this helps. Regards George Glover BDS MSc
