I Need a Filling But Suffer From Dental Anxiety. What Can Be Done?

Q.
Hi there, I’m 14 and have a massive problem with dental work while conscious. I have needed a filling for over a year but backed out because the process of numbing went wrong and I just couldn’t handle it. I was supposed to get a referral to arrange what could be done but never did. I’m going back to get another referral but what will they do, and what can I do?
I was put completely to sleep when I was younger to have 10 teeth removed which wasn’t so bad, but when I had one awake it sent me crazy! I’m not sure why I can’t cope with being conscious during treatment, but I just can’t and I don’t know what to do.

Hi, thank you for your question. You’re not the only person who struggles with this problem and many dental practices offer a number of relaxation methods to help you feel relaxed and at ease whilst having dental treatment. My advice would be to have consultations with as many different dentists as possible and see which one you feel the most comfortable with. Explain your anxieties to them and I’m sure they’ll suggest ways for you to have the treatment carried out comfortably. Good luck.
