Is it okay not to treat a missing tooth?

Q. I had to have tooth extracted due to infection. It is toward the back of my mouth and people can not even see it when I smile or talk. The dentist has recommend an implant and some other treatment, but I am contemplating just leaving it. Will it cause any problems if I do this, as I would rather save my money?
A. hi many thanks for your email, if the gap does not bother you and you can smile, and function without any problems then my advice is if you do not have the implant it will not cause you any detrimental problems. It should be noted however that as time does past the area will shrink and the amount of bone remaining in the future may mean there is a small chance a dental implant may not be possibly.
