Is it risky for diabetics to get dental implants?

Q. I am a retired dental surgeon and am asking this for my wife who is also a retired dental surgeon and is a diabetic What are the contra-indications, if any, for implants in Insulin reliant diabetic patients.,
A. Diabetes is a risk factor for implants as diabetic show slightly higher failure rates. I generally don’t feel its an absolute contra-indication and tend to treat patients on an individual basis, for instance if the patient has good quality and good bone volume the significance of the diabetes is less. However in smokers or patients with poor bone it can be a risk factor that needs explaining to patients before they commit to treatment regards andrew
