My Daughter Has 10 Missing Adult Teeth. What Kind Of Treatment Will She Need As She Gets Older?

Q.
Hi Dr Andrew. My daughter had her first dental X-ray today – she’s 9. The dentist has told us that she has 10 adult teeth missing, so will only have 18 adult teeth. She has had 4 adult teeth grow through. She has been referred to an orthodontist for further treatment. Please can you tell me what options are available to her as she gets older. Obviously, having 10 missing adult teeth could impact on her eating and speech. We are worried about her future and her self-esteem.
Any advice would be greatly received.
Thanks.
A.
Hi, thank you for your question. The orthodontist should be able to tell you in detail what the implications will be, but I’d guess that she will need braces with possible implants or bridges when she’s older to restore her teeth back to full function. Don’t worry about her self-esteem, many treatments these days are virtually unnoticeable to other people.
