Will The NHS Give Me Implants?

March 1st, 2014
Q.

I recently had 2 of my front teeth out. I have had a plate made, while healing is done. I constantly feel sick. I also have 3 other teeth missing , back teeth, from a long time ago. I am with an NHS dentist, I am in receipt of working tax credit. I live alone, and this could work out very expensive for me. please could you give me some good advice. cannot keep these dentures, I feel sick all the time and don’t enjoy food any more. They are really ruining everyday life for me now and I just feel like it’s unfair and that something could be done about it.

What Can Be Done About My Dying Tooth?

February 15th, 2014
Q.

My lower pre molar is dying have had a root filling but it will have to come out eventually. My dentist said I could have a bridge or implant or even just have it out and leave a gap!! I would like to have it out and then my teeth spread out/straightened . I have had a consultation for braces and I am still thinking about it.I need some help with a complete picture of options with time and cost implications – should I contemplate a bridge or an implant? I need comprehensive information – I favour the straightening as it seems less intrusive but I understand that i cant just have the lower set done – I am happy with my uppers but the lower teeth are overcrowded. isn’t it much better for your general health – and cleaning your teeth?

I Have Recurring Abscesses, Should I Be Worried?

February 9th, 2014
Q.

I had a dental abscess over 5 years ago in top left gum. I had root canal and a crown. For several months I have been able to feel an odd sensation where the abscess was but as it wasn’t painful and was infrequent I didn’t do anything about it. A couple of weeks ago the sensation became stronger and was persistent then last week I noticed a lump the size of a large pea. The dentist was vague but said it wasn’t really an abscess, more an infection where the abscess had been and prescribed metronidazole. I have just finished the course and there is very little if any change. It’s not bothering me other than concern over what it is and I would leave it to see if the lumps goes itself but next month I was planning to try to get pregnant. Should I go back to the dentist? (I told him my plans and he wasn’t concerned but he did seem very relaxed!)

My Implant Is Painless But Exposed, Is This A Problem?

February 3rd, 2014
Q.

HI Dr I had an implant placed in my lower jaw a month ago. Soon after a couple of weeks i noticed a painless gum boil in that area which has recently healed itself without treatment. But now i can see the implant has exposed itself through the gum ,this is also painless and with no obvious swelling. I am a bit concerned, can you advise on what you think could be going on here? I don’t want to get in touch with my own dentist just yet as he is abroad.

Are Dental Implants The Way To Go For Me?

January 25th, 2014
Q.

I have three missing teeth and my doctor has mentioned overcoming this with dental implants. I have a real fear of any kind of surgery or needles and wondered if I had any other options? One of my missing teeth fell out about five years ago so my doctor isn’t sure how successful an implant would be there as there may be little bone left in that area. It all just seems too complicated and serious. I have had five years with no tooth and there have been no problems. but i have changed are and my new dentist isn’t happy leaving the hole in my mouth. He is very keen on the idea of dental implants but I am too worried to find out exactly what the procedure is. Do you think this treatment would be best for me or something less severe like false teeth?

Would teeth extraction eliminate recurring abscess?

January 19th, 2014
Q.

I have two problem teeth (one either side of the upper front two) that have been root canal filled but routinely abcess (once/twice every year). Each time I get on a course of antibiotics to clear up the infection but suffer pain for several days before the abcess clears. My dentist has rec ommended extraction but I dont really want dentures and cant have a bridge as I already have one for the front two teeth and cant extend anymore. My questions are: (a) will extraction definitely eliminate the abcess? (b) can I still have abcsesses even after an implant? I have been suffering abcesses for several years and now want a long term solution that doesn’t involve dentures!

I have had a yellow watery fluid coming from my nose after implant treatment. Is something wrong?

January 13th, 2014
Q.

When I was 14 (I am now 50) I had root canal treatment. Several years later the tooth crumbled and a crown was fitted. A replacement crown was put in around 8 years later and this was badly fitting, though the dentist didn’t think so. It fell out (crown and peg) two weeks ago and I went to a new dentist (my previous one was too far away when this happened). I was told that there was decay in the root and I could not have a replacement crown and post. From the options I was given I opted for an implant. I had three x-rays and was told that there appeared to be enough bone in this area. Following the first major part of the implant surgery, ie removal of the bone, I was told and shown a hole in the sinus. The dentist said this was caused from bacteria and an infection from the previous crown and asked if I had had previous sinus problems, which I hadn’t. He then told me that was going to use the implant to ‘seal’ the hole and that a good blood clot needed to form. The implant therefore slightly protrudes into my sinus. As stated I have never had sinus problems before. I am now four days post operative. I have two stiches in my mouth holding the implant implants. There is a lot of bruising on the roof of my mouth, which I believe is normal. For the past two days I have had yellow watery fluid coming from my nose a number of times. I am on antibiotics (Amoxicillin 3 times a day) and I am approaching day 4. Is this discharge usual. There is no obvious pain or discomfort yet except perhaps a slight feeling of tension, buzzing in my jaw towards my ear (if that makes any sense). Having now looked at a number of articles I am concerned that my sinus is infected and that the implant will not work.

Can you get dental implants if you have gum disease and how much would it cost?

January 6th, 2014
Q.

Hello. Can you please help me with my dental situation. Can u have implants if you have got gum disease and how much would it cose for a complete set of implants and can’t i be a guinea pig for anyone. I am forty nine years old and really self-concious about my smile and I also hate going out because of this. I have only got six teeth down the bootom and two at the top and i don’t think that they are going to last much longer because of my gum disease. And dentures make me retch all the time so it wouid be good if you could reccomend what would be good alternative for my situation or if you could reccomend me to someone to be a guinea pig for them so I can get my teeth fixed and be happy with my smile.

Some of my teeth are sensitive after building up teeth with fillings. Dentists says I need crowns but I can’t afford it. Advise?

December 27th, 2013
Q.

my teeth had worn down, due to no teeth at the back,& my teeth were very sensitive,& painful,my dentist said he would advise crowns, which i could not afford,he said he could build my teeth up which would make a difference to how they looked & this would cost me just under £1000. I had 15 teeth built up,which i was really happy with, but now after 3 months i am getting sensitivity in some, & little holes coming on the corners, but my dentist says “well the build up is only fillings”you need crowns, He took an exray & said one of the front teeth that is sensitive now really needs root canal treatment, this cost me £1,013 what can i do . I can not afford crowns ,which he says would cost me about £7000.please advise.I feel as if he is just trying to get more money out of me.

My dentist said my implant was fitted too high and the gum will never fill the space. What should I do?

December 19th, 2013
Q.

I had two dental implants fitted to the bottom left of my mouth, the back teeth five and six. There is a gap between the bottom of crown six and the gum where food gets trapped. I am always flossing the area which leaves the area feeling strange. The floss has got trapped on occassion when it reaches the titanium post. The dentist said the gum would eventually fill the space within two months, already been one month. How can a gum grow up to meet a crown? The gum is completley healed now. My dentist said the implant was fitted too high and the gum will never fill the space. What is your opinion?
