What options for sedation are there?

Q. Hi, what kinds of sedation can be offered for a full set of implants? I don\’t particularly stay awake during the treatment but I obviously have to. Any suggestions doctor?,
A. Thanks for your question. The 2 most common methods of sedation available are IV sedation and Inhalation sedation. Not all practices offer sedation and you would need to discuss this with the dentist. During the treatment you will remain conscious but will be in a more relaxed state and many patients don\’t remember the appointment afterwards. You will need to be assessed to ensure that you are suitable for sedation and would need to bring someone with you to your appointment. I hope that this helps. Regards George Glover BDS MSc

Can I get implants even though I am a nervous patient?

Q. I am a woman of over 50 years and am very nervous when getting dental treatment but must have implants. Due to decay one of my teeth needs removing but would I be okay for this treatment and what can be done about my particular fear of such treatment?,
A. Hi thanks for your question. Many people like yourself are anxious about dental treatment, especially implants. The good news is that many patients that undergo implant treatment find that it\’s not as traumatic as they expected it to be. If you\’re particularly anxious, I would advise speaking to the dentist and asking if they offer sedation procedures. During sedation you\’re in a much more relaxed conscious state and many patients have no recollection of the procedure being carried out. I hope that this helps. Regards George Glover

How long will my dental implants last?

Q. i want to get implants dr solanki 2 in fact but can you tell me how long i should expect them to last and then what would be done at this point?,
A. dental implants should last you a lifetime if you look after them they should be thought of as a permanent replacement for the root of your tooth. but in certain cases they can come out and fail and in such situations they may be replaced depending on the level of bone.

Can I get implants under general anaesthetic?

Q. Can you inform me if I am able to get teeth removed and implants oput in under general anaesthetic. I am a nervous patient and this implant treatment looks like it may be beyond my limits.
A. Hi thanks for your question.

I can understand your anxiety about the implant procedure and you’re not alone there are many people who are anxious about treatment.

To have treatment carried out under general anaesthetic requires a hospital visit as this is no longer done in general practice for patient safety reasons.  A general anaesthetic is a big undertaking and has it’s own risks which is why it’s only carried out by trained personnel with the appropriate support.

However there are other options available in general dental practice.  Many practices offer different methods of conscious sedation.  Where you are essentially put into a relaxed state but remain fully conscious throughout, but most people don’t remember anything that happened during the appointment.  These methods work for many people with dental anxieties.

It’s important to be sure that you are happy with the dentist who is going to be carrying out your treatment and are comfortable with him or her, most dentists and their teams will do all they can to make you feel at ease and minimise your anxiety levels.

I do hope that this helps.

Can I have implants to replace decayed teeth?

Q. My teeth are in a dreary state and are in desperate need of treatment. This is due o years as a child of drinking loads of sugary drinks and then sadly a bout of drug abuse in my late teens but I am now clean from the stuff for 4 years and have not looked back since. Sasdly the damage has already been done to my teeth. My dentist told me whitening would make little difference and thehy are more or les crumbling away so i AM HOPING implants are the right choice for me. This is really affecting my confidence so I am hopeful you can help me.
A. It is impossible to give advice about specific situations without reviewing your condition, but in general terms dental implants may be of help to you in your treatment

Can I be treated under anaesthetic as I am scared of the dentist?

Q. Would I be able to have two teeth extracted that are decayed and have an implant or two inserted under general anaesthetic? I am very scared of the dentist and have had panic attacks in the past when having dental treatment but is there any hope for me?
A. You could have the treatment in a dental practice under sedation but not a general anaesthetic, sedation does effectively the same thing but is much safer. Let me know if you’d like more help I would be happy to see you at my clinic in Essex for a full consultation.

Can I be put to sleep during implant treatment?

Q. Please tell me that a very powerful type of anaesthesia is used for the dental implant procedure. I really want to get my teeth sorted but am very scared of minor treatment at the dentist never mind something so intrusive as this. Can I be put to sleep. I don’t want to be aware of what is going on one bit!
A. Hi Thank you for your question.

Most clients manage to have dental implant treatment carried out under a local anaesthetic.  However many people are anxious about dental procedures.  In these cases sedation can be offered, while you are not completely put to sleep as this is not possible in general practice anymore for safety reasons, you are unlikely to be aware of the treatment being carried out and in many cases won’t remember it.  There are different sedation methods available.

You should speak to your dentist or the dentist you are considering for the implants and they will be able to guide you through the pros and cons of any sedation methods that the may offer.

Kind Regards.
George Glover.
