What does the sinuse tap procedure involve?

Q. My dentist has told me that I will need to have a sinus tap procedure before I am able to get dental implants. Could you please give me some info on just what this is, and how it will affect the time frame for implant treatment?
A. Hi, many thanks for your email. The sinus tap procedure to my understanding is to have a sinus lift as there is not enough bone between the sinus floor and bone in the mouth.

The sinus lift can be done first whereby the sinus membrane is lifted out of the way, and artificial bone mixed with your own bone is placed in the space to increase the bone height enough to place a dental implant. The graft does however need to heal for around 4-6 months before an implant can be placed. If there is a minimum of 4mm of bone the implant can be placed at the same time as the sinus lift procedure, thus decreasing the healing phase.

The other option is to indirectly lift the sinus membrane, and place the implant at the time of the lift. However, the amount of bone needed would be around 5mm so the lift would be no more than 3-4mm. This again allows for the implant to be placed at the same time as the sinus tap procedure and decrease the healing time.

Once the implant has been placed the full treatment from this point should take around 4 months.

Hope this is helpful.
