Why is the bone grafting procedure needed?

Q. I have been researching the dental implant treatment and have come across what is called the bone graft, where bone is taken from another area of the body to supplement the jaw bone, I think. Why would this be necessary? What reason would there be for the bone not being right in the jaw?
A. hi many thanks for your email, in most circumstances when a tooth is lost from the jaw, the biggest problem is the bone supporting the tooth shrinks, if this shrinkage occurs sometimes the remaning bone is not wide enough or high enough to then accomodate a dental implant. at this point if the patient still wants an implant in the site the only option would be to do a bone graft. hope this is helpful.
