Are dental implants possible if gum disease remains?

Q. My dentist has just informed me that I am going to lose all of my teeth because of gum disease. After taking care of my teeth this came as quite a shock. Are dental implants an option to help replace missing teeth or is this not possible with gum disease?
A. Hi, many thanks for your email. This is a regular question that i get asked. The gum disease is due to the problems associated with the teeth joining to the bone. So, when the teeth are extracted the gum condition also subsides. Once healing has taken place there is no reason why implants are not a good option to replace the missing teeth. However, if there are teeth still remaining in the mouth around which implants are going to be placed then my advice is to make sure the gum disease is stable around these teeth, before the placement of implants.

Hope this is helpful.
