How long should it take for my jawbone to heal after an accident?

December 20th, 2012
Q.

Hello Doctor,
Before 2 months, I met with a bike accident and lost my three front teeth on the upper jaw and two-front teeth on the lower jaw. I have consulted the dentist; she said that you can opt for bridge treatment for the upper jaw, and you could go for implant for the lower teeths as they are not disturbed (Its not broken or disturbed). I dont know why she asked me to go for bridge treatment (Which I dont like to do) for the upper jaw. In a later consultation, I did ask her why not implant for the upper jaw. She replied, yes you can do. I really dont know in what basis, she said okay. She also said that, if you want to do carry out implant treatment, you want to wait for one year. Because, the jaw bone would take some time to grow. Thats her tentative time for the growth. She doesnt know the exact time of that bone growth. Please advise on the same.

I am experiencing normal side-effects of dental implant surgery?

December 10th, 2012
Q.

I had an implant fitted 3 months ago and although It appeared to settle down after 3 doses of antibiotics, Although I still felt my gums and throat sore. I then had my new denture fittedbut could not stand the pain it caused. My tongue felt as if it was being pinched and starting to go numb. The dentist practically had to file the denture down completely on one side. This did help but the other problem I was experinceing was pain at the base of the tooth next to the implant which was like someone hitting a raw nerve when I tried to brush my teeth. The dentist said this was caused by a rogue nerve and took this tooth out also.Tthis resulted in a dry socket which again is very painful . It is starting to get better but my gums and throught still feel sore and I now have a horrible taste of iron in my mouth and it is very dry. Have you heard of these side affects before?

Do implants have to be replaced at any stage and what about cleaning practise?

December 9th, 2012
Q.

Hi,

I am nineteen years old and have recently had an implant fitted but the tooth has not been screwed in just yet and I am still currently wearing a denture.

Through out my journey, I have had around four different dentists, and I’m starting to get a little confused. When I ask them questions, they tend to ignore the question and say you don’t need to worry about that just yet. That makes it worse, and I worry more.

I have quite a few unanswered questions and I’m sorry if you feel bombarded. Firstly, do implants have to be replaced? Secondly, am I able to have braces after the implant has been fitted to correct spacing between the teeth surrounding the implant. Thirdly, will the implant need cleaned at any point?

Thanks

I am having problems with my sinus graft, what should I do?

December 3rd, 2012
Q.

I started over a year ago to have three implants done to anchor my bridge. The sinus was moved due to its location close to an implant and synthetic bone was backed and given time to heal. I ended up with a sinus infection over 8 months ago. Since then I have seen an ENT to have the infection scraped from my left sinus and the infection still persists. I have been to an infectious disease doctor to get antibiotics pumped throuhg through an Iv. After six weeks I still have an infection. The dentist finally decided to remove all the packing and anchors for the implant to try and get rid of the infection. All indications are that the infection started when the material was packed into my bone. I know have a hole in my jaw where the sinus is visible. Temporary packing was done to protect the sinus after the procedure to remove all the work that has been done over the last year. The dentist is not sure whether to try it again or not. My question is what can be done to repair the damage where the sinus is visible and where should I go from here. I currently have the antibiotics via the IV for the next three weeks to try to get rid of the infection.
If the infection was in the synthetic packing why did the antibiotic not get absorbed and kill the bacteria once it was in the jaw?

I am experiencing some pressure from an Implant I had fitted 7 years ago, should I be worried?

November 30th, 2012
Q.

Hi, about 7 years ago I had a bone graft followed by an upper lateral incisor implant done. I periodically experience pain above the actual implant. The type of pain is like an ache and increases when I press on the upper gums. The pain also radiates behind my nose. Could this type of pain just be sinus pressure, or could it be directly related to the implant procedure? The implant seems quite solid and strong, however bone loss is always a concern for me since the bone graft procedure. However, I’m only 25 years old. The gums look quite healthy from what I can tell. Any help or advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Is there any way to have dental implant treatment on the NHS?

November 30th, 2012
Q.

I had a stroke 16 years ago and lost the use of my arm.As a result I now do everything using my good arm and my teeth.Because of this,my teeth have all began to break and loosen.Would I qualify to have implants done on the N.H.S as a medical emergency as my quality? of life will be drastically reduced without the use of my teeth and would implants be strong enough.I currently have 5 teeth veneered but they keep breaking.I have 2 teeth missing already and another 4 that are possibly going to have to be removed.Would I just need to replace the missing ones or would I be better off having all my teeth removed and full implants ?.I am 46 years of age.

Is it nessessary to have a full set implant in the upper jaw or can I get just the front few done?

November 27th, 2012
Q.

I have only two natural teeth left in upper jaw. I used to have 4 crowns in the front but after many years the root couldn’t hold the teeth anymore. I’ve had them removed. I’d like implants. I’m 56 years old. Can I get just about 8 teeth for comestic purposes in the front. Or must I have the whole top of mouth done. I have lived without back teeth for a long time. I got my crowns done because of broken front teeth in my twenties. I do not have any gum desease.
On the lower jaw I have 9 teeth left. I’m more concerned with the upper ones. I have a small front artificial upper plate, as I cannot bear the full one. Is it nessessary to have a full set implant in the upper jaw or can I get just the front few done. Than you.

What is the rate of success with dental implants?

October 21st, 2012
Q.

As stated on this website, that the subperiosteal and plate form implants have a high failure rate. Can you please state the failure rates for each implant type as a percentage. What other factors affect the succes rate of implants? ie are there chemicals in tooth paste or other oral products that can affect the implants? What are the disadvantages of having implants over dentures? Any additional information that you can provide to help me answer my EPQ question, which is “What is the best way to replace missing teeth?”

I don’t have enough jawbone for dental implants, is a denture the best option for me?

October 16th, 2012
Q.

I have had my four bottom front between my K9’s pulled due to bone loss and have been told that because of the bone loss I’m not a candidate for implants. I was wondering is there anything other a fixed bridge that could work for me? I heard that there is now a denture that snaps on over your existing teeth. If so do you know the price range for them?
thank you for taking the time to read my message and for any help you can give me dr moore

My 12 year old son is soon to lose a tooth, how long should he wait until he can have a dental implant?

October 13th, 2012
Q.

Hi my son had an accident at the age of 6 or 7 a football dislodged one of his front tooth. The dentist we saw made him wear what i would describe as like a protective gum sheild for a while to protect and save it she said, although she did not push it back up into the gum. He is now 12 1/2 and the tooth although not giving him any pain has slowly started to discolour. He went to the dentist yesterday after an appointment with a arthodonist who said that after an xray that he will eventually loose the tooth, but needed a root canal. Obviously this really upset me as he is so young. My own dentist tooth a further xray who then said he did not what to do! He said that when teeth are dislodged they usually reset but this hasnt there is a gap at the top so a root canal cannot be done. And that the tooth is eating away at the root/nerve i cannot remember and this nwill eventually make the tooth loose. If he does loose the tooth, when would he be able to have a dental implant? I. Many thanks
