What Qualifications Should I Look For In A Dentist Who Can Supply Dental Implants?

May 16th, 2014
Q.

Hi, I was wondering if you would be willing to offer me some advice? I have recently have had my tooth extracted as there was crack and severe infection in the gums which the Dentist has cleared. In trying to clear the infection from the gums, he had to “dig” into the gums and this has created a deep hole. He has asked me to wait for three months to heal. After that he will talk with me the options of replacement. He is suggesting a dental implant. I am not sure, because by taking out the infected gum, this has left a deep cut. Please advise.

What qualifications should I look out for in a dentist who would do dental implants? I don’t know where to start! Many thanks.

I Have Had Three Teeth Removed But Cannot Get A Referral For My Implant Dentist, Help?

May 9th, 2014
Q.

Hello there, I wonder if you could give me advice regarding Dental Implants. I am a 40 year old female and having wasted valuable time with two local dentists who, both NHS, have decided to remove teeth rather than advise on bridges, implants etc. I am now faced with a possible need for 3 lower dental implants. I cannot go to my local dental implant specialist as apparently I need to be referred to them from my existing dentist, who is refusing to do so and is pushing for tooth removal and dentures. I am becoming more paranoid with the gaps in my teeth, although they are luckily not near the front I am conscious people can see the gaps and this is affecting my work and social life. Please advise, many thanks in advance!

Gum Disease Has Ruined My Mouth, Should I Have A Plate Or Dental Implants?

May 1st, 2014
Q.

Over twenty years ago I had bridges on my top teeth on the left and right sides. I developed gum disease around three years ago under the bridge and had to have the middle part of the bridge removed. I still have the bridge attached to the teeth at either side and a gap in the middle where this tooth was removed. The gum disease has also affected where the bridged part remains and the gum has receded so much that there is 4-5mm of the the original tooth that they were attached to showing, these are painful to touch and a black colour. What treatment would be the best way forward as one of the remaining teeth has also become loose so I am going to have gaps from three teeth missing. My dentist has said I should have these teeth taken out and have a plate which I do not want. I would like implants apart from the cost, but is it better for me to have implants inserted straight after the teeth get taken out or would it still be possible to have them done in future and have a plate till then, also would implants be possible with the gum disease I have got, I am worried that i have implants and then they do not work because of the gum disease.

Since My Apicoectomy, My Roots Are Slightly Exposed, Is This A Problem?

April 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi, I had an apicoectomy done in December last year everything went fine but the surgery was done above my crowns on front teeth now my tooth from under the crowns are slightly exposed i am worried that I may do some damage. What do you think is the best thing that I can do? Would I need to have new crowns fitted? If so will I be able to have it done on NHS? Or are there any solutions that could be used to fill the gaps somehow, or perhaps even should I wait longer and hope things will approve? Thank you for your time.

How Can I Maximise My Implant Success Rate?

April 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Bohara I am considering getting a dental implant soon and am doing a little investigation into treatment success rates first. I’m looking for some expert advice on what can go wrong if the implant fails to take and what can I do to maximise my chances of it succeeding? I’ve read a little about infection when they are not fitted properly but would like a concise, professional summary. Hoping you can provide one. Thank you very much.

The Implants I Got Abroad Have Become Infected, What Should I Do?

April 14th, 2014
Q.

A dentist abroad fitted my upper jaw with implants and bone grafts two and a half years ago and in that time I have had constant chronic sore gum at the front of my mouth where the bone grafts were done. When i went back to them they just kept telling me nothing was wrong and there is no problem, I said obviously there is a problem, my gum is constantly seriously sore and my nose is constantly discharging fluid. I went to an oral surgeon and nasal surgeon and in their opinion there is infection where the grafts were done. I contacted the company again and was told they would fix the problem if I paid the final payment I owed of £1500, I said I would pay the money when I was satisfied, but you have left me in constant pain and also they said there was no problem, so how could they fix it. Because this treatment was done in Bratislava, the NHS in the UK will not touch it and neither UK dental surgeons. I need help, this is ruining my life. What should I do?

Is My Implant Treatment Plan Too Fast?

April 4th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Moore, I hope you may be able to find the time to advise me. I live in Moscow and following recent inflammation was medicated by my dentist for a gum infection which was spreading to the bone. The cause is the unreplaced removal of a maxillary second premolar. This was done 3 years ago and I was unaware of the consequences of inaction. Surrounding teeth have been spreading and my indecision urgently needs to be replaced by an implant. I have consulted with a dental surgeon practising at the same hospital, have had a CBVT scan, and been confirmed as suitable. The language barrier has been heightened by the practitioners not wanting to deal with my detailed inquiries about the procedure. I have researched techniques online, including on this site, and while confident in his abilities by referral from my excellent dentist, feel in need of some reassurance. You will not be surprised to hear that there has been some loss of bone height. I believe there is 6.5mm of healthy bone which he intends to increase to 10mm by grafting. This sounded okay to me but then I heard that he intends to complete the entire procedure in one session; grafting, root form implant and immediate loading, in an estimated 20 mins. It seems to me that he is pushing the envelope in every direction, would you agree? He gave me an 80% estimate of success considering the bone loss, but it appears to me as a layman that that would be increased by a more staged approach, am I wrong? I hope I am not presenting ethical concerns, but I feel in need of a second opinion. Thanks and regards.

What Work Would I Need Doing To Prepare Me For Dental Implants?

March 20th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Fahey! My teeth are absolutely knackered. Some are cracked quite badly and one has fallen out. I know that his sounds quite bad and truthfully it is, the state of my mouth makes me feel terrible in my day to day life. So basically I was wondering, what sort of work might I need before having implants in order to prepare my mouth for them? Would I need extensive amounts of work done? As that could prove too costly for me, especially with the prices of the implants I’d like afterwards. Thanks, look forward to hearing from you soon.

Has The Tip Of My Implant Screw Broken Off?

March 13th, 2014
Q.

Hi. Two years ago I broke a bridge snowboarding. I have had a three tooth implant. The veneers fell out this weekend whilst eating and the screw feels like it has broken. Not where it fits into the implant itself but the tip feels like it broke off in the veneer. The screw still feels firm in the implant so should the tip of the screw break? Ie one screw feels firm on the tip whilst the other has no tip and feels like a cylinder. I am seeing my specialist but wondered if this could be a fault with the screw. Cheers.
