Why Does My Crown Keep Falling Out?

February 2nd, 2015
Q.

Hi Dr. Moore. My crown has fallen out 7 times this year. My dentist glues it back in and doesn’t charge me but I am tired of having to have it glued back in every 6 weeks. I’ve stopped eating real sticky foods and I floss down and out, never pulling up. I told my dentist I thought she cut the tooth too low when she did my root canal treatment, but she says it might be because I chew too hard. Is this my fault or hers, and what can I do?

I Have Recurring Abscesses, Should I Be Worried?

February 9th, 2014
Q.

I had a dental abscess over 5 years ago in top left gum. I had root canal and a crown. For several months I have been able to feel an odd sensation where the abscess was but as it wasn’t painful and was infrequent I didn’t do anything about it. A couple of weeks ago the sensation became stronger and was persistent then last week I noticed a lump the size of a large pea. The dentist was vague but said it wasn’t really an abscess, more an infection where the abscess had been and prescribed metronidazole. I have just finished the course and there is very little if any change. It’s not bothering me other than concern over what it is and I would leave it to see if the lumps goes itself but next month I was planning to try to get pregnant. Should I go back to the dentist? (I told him my plans and he wasn’t concerned but he did seem very relaxed!)

I’ve had a new crown fitted and it’s a completely different colour to the rest of my teeth, is there anything I can do about this?

April 15th, 2013
Q.

Hi I have just had a crown fitted on a previously (23yrs ago) root filled molar (1st molar from front) that I am not happy with. Firstly it has a grey line around the gum line that looks horrible (reminds me of dirty finger nails!) and secondly the colour is at least a shade lighter than my own teeth which makes it very noticeable when I smile – bringing attention to the ugly grey gum line. My dentist has told me that the crown is ceramic on metal; the back cusp of the crown is all silver which I am not overkeen on but am given to understand that its more practical. My question is – is the grey line to be expected because of the previous root canal treatment or should I be able to expect a natural looking tooth right to the gum line rather than an obvious fake. Or is it me expecting too much. My teeth otherwise are in quite good condition. I would be grateful for your advice before I go back this Friday as I feel that my dentist will try to ‘fob’ me off with nonsense, as when she prepared the tooth for the crown she did not put on a temporary tooth but left me with the prepared ‘stump’ incl post. When I asked her if she would put a temporary tooth on she said that as she had now taken impressions a temporary tooth could ‘alter’ the prepared tooth when she came remove the temporary – altering the fit of the new crown! I have now learned that this is a load of rubbish and any temporary would be fixed with temporary paste which would be almost ready to fall off as I returned for the permanent crown 1-2 weeks later. I now think the that fact that she was running half hour late might have more to do with it. This is my first experience of a crown and my first experience with this particular dentist. i look forward to your reply many thanks

What is the situation on implants and sport? What about bruxism?

January 24th, 2012
Q.
Hi History is:- Upper left 2 peg lateral. Traumatic fracture at gum line approx 1998. Root canal filled and crown fitted. Short peg as OPG revealed dog-leg shaped root. Root now has hairline crack. Currently aged 38, occasional rugby (now very infrequent), 5-a-side football). Questions:- 1. Am I likely to be a suitable candidate for implant (lifestyle factors can be tweaked !)? 2. What is life expectancy / replacement period for implants; will they need revisions and if so how many can be done; what is position if no further revisions are possible? 3. I expect rugby contra-indicates implants but what about football (I have always worn orthodontic mouthguard for both). 4. Possibly some occasional night-time bruxing – would this preclude implant / would a lower guard help? 5. Any idea on likely cost? Many thanks,

For what reason do you think dentist said root canal treatment was not option for infection?

December 28th, 2011
Q.
Been told today that I need an extraction due to an infection, and told RCT is not an option so now have a gaping hole from the composite filling being taken out whilst the antibioctics treat the infection with an extraction booked for next week. Root canal has failed and dentist says tooth extraction is only option. Give your opinion?

December 22nd, 2011
Q.
Due to stress I had a antibiotics to remove an abcess, with temporary filling then root canal after. My tooth felt fine during the months with the temporary filling but after the root canal felt wobbly and intermittently painful. After a year and a half the dentist has told that the next time I say the tooth is painful he will remove it. Obviously I went through the root canal in order to keep the tooth. It is very painful now, I would like a second opinion as I feel my dentist is disinterested and just wants to do what is easiest for him. I am on very low income.,

Root canal filling or dental implants?

December 3rd, 2011
Q.
I have a decaying (possibly dead) lower molar with subgingival decay. My dentist has explained a root canal may fail and a surgeon has told me that taking out the tooth once root filled to then attempt an implant is more complex. In cases with subgingival decay of a lower molar what are your views on root canal fillings versus implants?,

I am confused about my dentists advice, can you help?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.
After the removal of my UR back molar due to bone loss I had to have root canal on the next UR molar which now has to be extracted as it cracked across. They advised I would need sinus lift and bone graft before an implant could replace the tooth. My dentist is advising I don’t need a sinus lift but would extract then do a bone graft at same time as first stage implantation. Is this a secure way to go or should I have 1st stage implant after the bone graft has healed? Thanks for your advice – I’m confused!,
