How long would a bone graft take to heal and then put the implants in?

Q. Hello Dr Glover. Than you for your time. , i was think of having implants for two teeth that are missing on my upper jaw but I have been told in the past that I have quite a small jaw and I have been reading on your website about bone grafts. What would that entail and how long would it take to heal and then put the implants in? many thanks for your time,
A. Thanks for your question. A bone graft is used where there is not enough bone in the jaw to support dental implants. There are many different types of graft; one of the most common is to use a bone derivative product that integrates (knits) with the existing bone. Generally speaking a bone graft would be left 6 months to heal before placing dental implants. A detailed consultation would be required which would involve x-rays and perhaps a CT Scan to look at the bone levels. Regards and all the best George Glover BDS MSc
