How painful and intrusive are dental implants?

Q. I have been informed that I need to get an implant for one of my front teeth. It seemed like the tooth was going to be fine, but things change quickly and I am in need of an implant. Of all the dental procedures I have heard of this sounds one of the most painful. Could you please tell me how intrusive and painful it really is, to put my worries at ease?
A. Hi, many thanks for your enquiry. A single tooth dental implant is as invasive as a deep filling on a tooth. I place well over 500 a year and feedback from my patients tell me this. They also comment that the extraction of the tooth is much more invasive than the implant treatment. During the procedure the area should be fully numb. After, there may be a degree of pain and swelling but nothing pain killers wont fix. After a day or so the discomfort should be virtually gone. Hope this is helpful.
