I have gum disease and bone loss, can I get implants?

Q. Due to gum disease I am losing my teeth, I talked to the dentist and he said I should get dentures. I would prefer implant but he said that I had bone loss as well so this would be difficult. Is there any way I could stop my toth loss or at least get implants rather tahn dentures?,
A. Thanks for your question. Gum disease if left untreated can lead to bone loss around the teeth and ultimately lead to losing the teeth. If the gum disease has been treated and the oral health is stable and under control then dental implants may be an option for you. It will be dependent on there being sufficient bone avaialble to support the dental implants. You may need some intensive appointments with a dental hygienist or periodontist depending on how severe the gum disease is to get that under control first. Thanks. George Glover BDS MSc
