I need an implant but my main nerve is set too high, any advice?

Q. i\’ve had an xray to look at replacing 3 teeth bottom left but my main nerve sits quite high and the pin used to secure implants is a set length so i\’ve been told implant stem needs to be short as cutting into that nerve is not good, is there an answer when main nerve so high, thanks,
A. Hi thanks for your question. It\’s correct that there is a nerve that runs through the lower jaw and it\’s very important to avoid placing implants where they may damage this nerve. There are a variety of types of implants that come in differing widths and lengths to make use of available bone. In cases where there perhaps is concern about the location of this nerve a CT scan may be taken which allows a 3D view of the bone and structure and can be used for guided surgery where the implants are virtually placed using the help of computer software which can then be sent to produce a surgical guide. I would ensure that you discuss with the dentist and ensure that you are fully aware of how the treatment will progress. Ask your dentist if they have treated other cases like yours and what the success rate will be. I hope that this helps. Regards George Glover
