I’ve been told I can’t have a bridge now! Why is this?

Q. Hi, About 6-8 months ago i had a tooth extracted from the bottom corner of my month. as its near the front i asked my dentist if i could have a bridge when it healed and was told yes. Recently i went back for my 6month check up and was told i couldnt have a bridge as one of the teeth it would attach to has a filling in it. Could you advise me if this is correct as i dont know why i wasnt told this from the start plus its something i really want. Thanks,
A. Thanks for your question. A dental bridge relies on the natural teeth to support it. If a tooth has a filling in it, then this can lead to the tooth being weaker and may not be able to support a bridge and could break with the additional stress of the bridge being attached to it. It\’s hard to comment why you\’ve now been advised that a bridge is not an option, when you were previously without knowing your dental history. Have you had treatment on the tooth that was going to support the bridge since the othet tooth was taken out? Discuss the options with your dentist again as I am sure they would be happy to go over it all with you. Regards George Glover
