Is a dental implant necessary or merely for aesthetic reasons?

Q. A tooth toward the back of my mouth was removed due to decay. My dentist has recommended that I have an implant, but I would like to know whether any problems would occur if I was just to leave it the way it is? It is toward the back of mouth so no on can see it when I smile or talk.
A. This will be to stop the teeth drifting and to reduce the pressure on the teeth on the opposite side of the mouth, rather than for cosmetic reasons.
