Dear Dr Moore,
I had a filling fall out quite some time ago, stupidly I left it like this and my tooth eroded away leaving only a small amount visible. Yesterday I noticed a slight swelling on the gum above the tooth I phoned my dentist and they seen me today and removed the tooth. What I don’t understand is if this is the end of the problem? Will the abscess just go away by itself now the rotten tooth has been removed. I am pregnant and do not want any infection to harm my baby. Should I have been given antibiotics or will I be ok just gargling salt water and keeping the area clean as my dentist instructed me to do.

Hi, Thank you for your question -If you remove the tooth i.e. the source of the infection then the abscess should clear on its own. Best of luck, regards – Andrew Moore
