My Mum Has Severe Dry Mouth Symptoms After Having All-On-4 Implants. Why Has This Happened?

Q.
Hello Dr Fahey,

My Mum recently had the 4 dental implant treatment. Initially she was delighted with the results and how great they look but unfortunately she’s now experiencing severe dry mouth symptoms and the implants have begun to discolour. Her dentist has said that it is not due to the implants and that he’s never had a patient to complain about dry mouth before. He had to replace the bottom implants due to the discolouration and it looks like he’s going to do the same with the top set. Could he have damaged a nerve going to the saliva gland during the insertion procedure? I think the lack of Saliva is causing the discolouration but surely he would know this. Any advice on how to proceed?

Regards.

A.
Hello, thank you for writing in, it all sounds very unusual. It is difficult to comment without examining your mum in person. Has your mum changed or started taking medication? If this new treatment fails I’d advise you to seek a second opinion. Best of luck, Dr Nick Fahey.
