My new crown was attached to a 30 year old post which has now rusted. What choices do I have now?

Q. I had a root canal done on an upper tooth almost 30 years ago and a crown fitted. 2 years ago I had extensive work done including implants on my upper teeth and had a new crown fitted onto the root canal tooth for aesthetic reasons. The new crown has now come loose and has come out. The new crown was fitted to the 30 year old post and core which consists of 2 tiny screws which have come loose and are attached to the new crown. One of the screws has rusted! Should my dentist have fitted the new crown to the old post and core or replaced it and what choices are open to me now?,
A. It depends on what the condition of the post, often trying to remove the old posts results in a root fracture. Your next option is to replace the crown and post or place a dental implant instead. You might even be able to use the existing implants to hold a bridge??
