I had an implant in 2007 and dentist has told me I will need to pay more money for a bone graft. This can’t be?!

August 1st, 2011
Q.
I had an Implant on a front canine tooth in 2007, I dicovered a small lump had appeared on my gum and went to see my dentist who told me that there is a possibility of some bone loss and having originally spent £1,600….would probably have to fork out another £1,500 for a bone graft….I\’m horrified, I was led to believe that this would last much longer than this, do I have any recourse regarding the original procedure?,

July 30th, 2011
Q.
I have bone loss and gap on left lower position 35 & 45.If The specialiat recommended bone graft but instead of implant would be better with bridge as this would be better to keep clean. I would have a gap with the implant and would see metal bits. Could you please advise.,

I am considering implants as a more permanent measure when I replace my old dentures, but I don’t want a bone graft. What are the chances I will need this?

July 24th, 2011
Q.
I have dentures in and they\’re due to be replaced because I\’ve had them for a while now and they\’re pretty ruined. I\’m now 73 and I am considering dental implants as a more permanent measure. I am in a healthy state. However I\’m worried that I may have to go ahead with a bone graft. What are the chances of this happening at my age?,

Why did implant fail? Am I allergic?

July 15th, 2011
Q.
My dental implant on my anterior #9 has failed. The implant was originally placed in my mouth roughly 5-7 years ago. I do not smoke, and I take very good care of my teeth. I recently went back to go see my periodontist due to puss and infrequent bleeding of the implant gum tissue. The puss and bleeding in the gum could not be controlled no matter what I tried. I went back to my periodontist to try and fix this situation, but unfortunately the implant could not be saved. My periodontist says the implant failed due to a breakdown of the hydroxyapatite coating on the implant. He tells me that the breakdown of the hydroxyapatite coating on the implant caused an allergic reaction that lead to the degeneration of the bone in the infected area, and thus causing the inflamed tissue. When the implant was removed, he said that there was no bone left in the area, and that the implant was held in place by inflammed tissue. I have recently had a bone graft done, and will likely need another one. My questions are this: How do I know for sure this is the reason that the implant failed? Or was I allergic to the implant metal itself? Or was it something else? Is there a test I can require him to perform to find out what I am allergic to? How do I know that the next implant wont have the same issue? Being that my implant is in the very front of my mouth, I am very insecure about the way it looks. Is another implant still the best option for my situation? Or is a bridge a better option for my case? My periodontist isn\’t keen on doing a bridge because the two teeth on either side of the area have never been touched, or even had a cavity. It would mean filing down to perfectly healthy teeth. Please help. I feel lost and I am not sure what I should do next.,

I’m considering dental implants, any advice?

July 1st, 2011
Q.
Over 20 years ago I was involved in an RTA and as a result I lost four upper front. Some bone may be aswell. I am now considering implants, not a bridge. I would be grateful for any advice you could give me as to what is the best treatment, physician to do the implants, I live in the Leeds area but that is irrelevant because I would be happy to travel. Kind regards.
