I am having problems with my sinus graft, what should I do?

December 3rd, 2012
Q.

I started over a year ago to have three implants done to anchor my bridge. The sinus was moved due to its location close to an implant and synthetic bone was backed and given time to heal. I ended up with a sinus infection over 8 months ago. Since then I have seen an ENT to have the infection scraped from my left sinus and the infection still persists. I have been to an infectious disease doctor to get antibiotics pumped throuhg through an Iv. After six weeks I still have an infection. The dentist finally decided to remove all the packing and anchors for the implant to try and get rid of the infection. All indications are that the infection started when the material was packed into my bone. I know have a hole in my jaw where the sinus is visible. Temporary packing was done to protect the sinus after the procedure to remove all the work that has been done over the last year. The dentist is not sure whether to try it again or not. My question is what can be done to repair the damage where the sinus is visible and where should I go from here. I currently have the antibiotics via the IV for the next three weeks to try to get rid of the infection.
If the infection was in the synthetic packing why did the antibiotic not get absorbed and kill the bacteria once it was in the jaw?

Should I go for fixed or removable teeth after sinus lift?

June 11th, 2012
Q.
I’m healing from a sinus floor lift, about three months now. I have to make a choice between implants that the denture is screwed in place, or one that snaps in and is removable. Can you give me the pros and cons for each method. I’d rather not have to take them out. I was told that the snap in kind are easier to clean, but wouldn’t a water pick clean the fixed kind? I was also told that the fixed kind are heavy and that they would affect speech, because there is a small space between the gum and denture. I also was told that with the snap in, I would need 5 implants and 6 with the fixed. I would have to go in once a year for either, to remove and clean or replace the clips. Thanks,

I cannot afford implants at present. Will bone graft last for a while?

January 14th, 2012
Q.
I had a decayed upper back molar removed this past July 2010. The oral surgeon has preped it with bone graft and now wants to do the implant this week with the sinus lift. (6 mos later). My dilemma is I can not afftord $ 4,000 right now. Can i wait a year or two then get the implant then? My bone graft turns into bone so it should be OK., right?,

I am confused about my dentists advice, can you help?

December 2nd, 2011
Q.
After the removal of my UR back molar due to bone loss I had to have root canal on the next UR molar which now has to be extracted as it cracked across. They advised I would need sinus lift and bone graft before an implant could replace the tooth. My dentist is advising I don’t need a sinus lift but would extract then do a bone graft at same time as first stage implantation. Is this a secure way to go or should I have 1st stage implant after the bone graft has healed? Thanks for your advice – I’m confused!,

I have two practices giving varying prognosis for my teeth. Can you advise?

August 4th, 2011
Q.
I am male, 65 and had 2 upper jaw implants fitted in 2007 to retain a full over-denture. Both implants failed and had to be removed last year. I now have 2 proposals before me for further treatment, one from the original practice and a new, second opinion. They differ in some fundamental ways and I\’m having trouble deciding which, if any, route to pursue. Both propose bilateral sinus lifts, followed after a few months by 3 implants on each side and a fixed bridge. One proposes implant fitment followed by a week without the denture then 4 months healing time, but the other offers a temporary acrylic bridge within 24 hrs of inserting 6 Astra implants, followed a few months later by a final metal bridge. The traditional quotation is certainly cheaper, but involves two 1 week periods without any upper teeth. In view of my history, could you comment on the relative merits (especially probability of complications/failure) of the two approaches? Thanks.,
