What does bone grafting involve?

Q. I am going to get a dental implant after discussing this option with my dentist. He mentioned that I would need what is called bone grafting. This does not sound all that nice. Could you please inform me of what it is?
A. Bone grafting is a procedure where at the site of implant placement, if there is not enough bone to hold a dental implant artifical bone, your own bone taken from somewhere in your mouth or hip is placed in the area to bulk the area out to then allow for the placement of an implant.

Sometimes this can be done at the same time as implant placement and other times the graft needs to be placed first, left to heal, and then the implant placed 4 -6 months later.
