What Kind Of Long-Term Stability Do Implants Offer Compared To Other Missing Teeth Treatments?

Q.
Hi Dr Glover. I’d really like to know what kind of long term stability implants offer compared to other treatments for missing teeth? I had a nasty accident recently which left me feeling very worse for wear but I won’t go into much detail. It has left me with a big, unsightly gap in my teeth which I feel very self-conscious over it and I don’t like to smile any more as it makes me look like a football hooligan. Is it a painful procedure? Thank you for helping me with this.

Hi, thanks for your enquiry, I’m sorry to hear about your accident.

Dental implants are a long term solution. If you practice proper care and have routine check-ups, your implants can last a lifetime. However the success rate is dependent on your lifestyle. This differs from other missing teeth treatments such as dental bridges which tend to last for 5-10 years before replacement is needed.

The implant fitting procedure is painless – it’s carried out under local anaesthetic so you won’t feel anything. There may be slight discomfort once it has worn off but it should ease after a few days.If you do experience pain or aching in the days after the procedure, your dentist will prescribe pain relief medication to keep it under control.
