Would dentures be a safer option for someone who is diabetic?

Q. My wife (early 50\’s) is diabetic and has receeding gums with deep pocketing (we are unsure of bone loss) due to this she has already lost a few teeth with resultant gaps and now finds chewing nearly impossible – should she consider replacing the lost teeth with implants or having all her remaing teeth removed and then having a full set of implants or with her medical conditions would dentures be a better/safer option? Regards.,
A. A full consultation would be required to identify the best options. If your wife has receeding gums and deep pocketing then this is a sign of periodontal disease which as well as having oral health concerns is also medically linked to other general health concerns. This should be treated with a series of visits with a dental hygienist or in more advanced cases a periodontologist as well as excellent home care. It\’s not advisable to place dental implants where there is active gum disease present in the mouth as the implants require the underlying bone to support them and unfortunately periodontal disease can cause bone loss. A full consult with a dentist who could then evaluate your wife\’s oral health along with medical and social considerations would be the first step. Regards George Glover BDS MSc
