Is it essential to replace missing teeth?

Q. I am pretty much all set to get a dental implant in a month. I have not paid for it yet and am now having second thoughts. The missing tooth in question is toward the back of the mouth and can not be seen. Could you possibly tell me if it is essential to get a missing tooth replaced if there are no real problems? Would there be any consequences at leaving a gap where there should be a tooth or is just aesthetic?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the clinical reason to get a tooth to replace a gap, would be to close a gap where in the future you would create more pressure on the other teeth. if you can function and are happy to  have the gap then my advice would be to leave the implant. however be warned that if you do decide to have the implant in the future there may not be enough bone to have the implant and the site may require a bone graft.
