I’m getting toothache and a strange taste from my crown. What could it be?

November 17th, 2013
Q.

hi doctor,
i recently got a job,but it pays very little and is self-employed,i hardly have any money for dental treatment, and need to go to my dentist because im now getting toothache where my crown is,i hear that it can cost up to £209 for a new crown, which i cant afford, what are my options on low income,is there a way to pay in installments ?
or can i get it done free or cheaper on nhs through my dentist?
i dont know ho long i can go without getting treatment as from past experinces once you start getting a tooth ache it only gets worse and does not go away,it hurts when i eat mainly and bite down on my crown,i had this crown done about 12 years ago,and my dentist tells me he would like to remove it to see whats going on underneath,he also tells me it could be a health risk as theres a gap between my tooth and crown where food and stuff get stuck,i do floss often and use mouthwash, and often there is a strange taste in my mouth coming from that area,so im a bit worried especially now theres a slight pain in that area now.
also a few years ago i had a local anestepic to remove a walt and after i passed out twice,so when/if i have dentist treatment im also worried about the injection and if it will make me pass out again,i have had many injections prior to this but had no problems.
hope you can help and asnwer all these questions from me,
thanks in advance.

If the infection has returned is tooth extraction and the placement of an inevitable?

November 17th, 2013
Q.

I have had a failed root canal treatment. The endodontist removed it and bleached it and then sealed it up again. He said I would need a dental crown, but that I should leave it for a few months as there was a danger the infection would return, in which case I will have wasted my money on the crown. Two months later the thing has started to hurt again, so I’m pretty sure that it has become infected again. Does this mean that tooth extraction is now inevitable? And once the tooth is gone, can I be sure there il be no recurrence of infection?I would like an implant, but not if thre was a cance of infection under it. How long after extraction should n implant be carried ut, if the tooth is infected? Thank you for your time and I hope you can help.

I am anxious about getting my teeth treated but I want my smile back. What are my options?

November 11th, 2013
Q.

My remaing teeth are in a terrible condition & now I’m in a better financial position I would love to have a smile back on my face. I’m frightened to death of the prospect of what I may be facing as I have suffered with anxiety for some years. My confidence is now being effected in my day to day duties & seem to be avioding verbal communication due to the visibility of my horrible teeth. Over the years I have shied away from visiting Dentists & I don’t think I have one good tooth remaining in my mouth. What options would be available to me & would I receive any support prior to any treatment being carried out ?

Is it possible to do a bone graft around Bicon implant where there is bone loss?

November 11th, 2013
Q.

i am 32 and a non smoker i had a bi con dental implant on my front tooth 8 years ago during a check up and x rays it was discovered that the bone around the implant was deteriorating due to an infection. The dentist decided that due to the amount of bone loss more than half the implant would have to come out the crown was taken out but the implant remained solid in the remaining bone. Healing can placed on implant. Can new bone be grafted around the implant or does it have to be removed? what are my options ? Thanks

I was told orthodontic treatment would be free for my missing dentist but now they say it’s not. Can you advise?

November 3rd, 2013
Q.

Hello! I have a missing lateral incisor and a crown on the other lateral incisor. My canine has been scraped small, so they could try to fit one big false tooth there but I refused because it looked weird. This procedure was made in Africa in 2008. Now I have a missing tooth and a crown which is starting to smell!!!! I went to my local dentist for a check up and asked them to remove the crown. I also asked them to refer me to the orthodontist but he refused to remove the crown. The reception gave me the orthodontist’s number. I called them and asked them to give me an appointment. They said because I was 20 years old that it was not free but told them that I have a HC2 form but they said it was private appointment . A dentist told me that the procedure would be free because I had a missing tooth!!!! please help? Is this right or wrong? Will I get a free treatment because of my missing tooth? If I have to pay for braces how much will it be? By the way I have not broken or damaged the missing tooth. After my baby teeth fell out x-rays should no lateral incisor on my left side and a very small lateral incisor on my right side(which looks like a baby teeth but now has a crown).

Is it possible to remove my troublesome tooth and re-fit it afterwards using PeriAcryl?

November 3rd, 2013
Q.

I have an old “crown-on-gold-post” upper left incisor which is, over time, slowly dropping down (it has also moved over to the left, increasing the gap between the front teeth, and partiall covering the next tooth along). It is not currently loose, but my local dentist says it is the bone rejecting the dead tooth root, so it will fall our eventually….? The bottom half of the tooth was originally broken off in 1984: the nerve was removed (VERY painful!), a gold pillar with the matched false tooth attached was then screwed / glued into the old root canal after it had been drilled into (prepared?). I have to say that until recently, this tooth has been completely trouble-free, looked good, etc…but in the last 5 years or so, I have noticed it has gradually dropped significantly: It is now approximately 2mm+ lower than the adjacent tooth. I appreciate this is going to require attention eventually whatever happens, but having spent the last few months researching my options, I have come up with something that I think MAY be the best solution overall (I have been out of work and cannot really afford the Ti implant-route at this stage!) Is it possible to do the following: 1) Extract the offending tooth. 2) Remove the top part of the root. 3) Refit the tooth (which should now be able to be inserted further in / squared up?), using PeriAcryl (or similar) to secure it to the bone. 4) Over time the gum will bond back with the tooth, thereby holding it back in place securely……. If you have a “real” email address, I can send you pix of the tooth and a diagram of what I’m suggesting? As an engineer (but NOT a dentist!), I think this sounds plausible, and should take a very short time to actually do (if possible), avoiding the implant fitting / settling time / multiple visits, etc….. Please advise: if ti is possible, how much would it cost to have done..?

October 6th, 2013
Q.

Hello doctor, I live in aberdeen. I am forty and I work in the NHS. I have a couple of irregular teeth in my lower jaw, which makes me a bit definsive and affects my confident in a negative manner. To a great extent, I am concerned about this and have had an impact on my confidence. Is there a solution for this now..or a range of options from the dental treatments? it would be really great if you could give me a bit on information about what is available out there in terms of treatment and for someone only able to afford £2500 worth of treatment. I appreciate an answer to this Thanking You

My tooth was knocked out by my dog in an accident. Implants are too expensive. Can you advise?

September 29th, 2013
Q.

Hello, my dog identically knocked my front tooth out and I’ve been given a denture now after the accident which I really hate. I smile a lot plus recently have become unemployed. I’m in desperate need of a dental implant so could you please let me know of a dentist who does 0% finance options fot the unemployed if possible because this denture is noticeable and has crushed my confidence completely. Please help me with this situation. I live in Southall and I;ve checked all around here and have found that they are over priced and definitely don’t help the unemployed in any shape or form.
Thank you

I have not been to the dentist in years because I am petrified of my dentist. Can you help?

September 29th, 2013
Q.

I am absolutely petrified of a dentist consequently have not been for years and my teeth are now loose. I don’t know what to do and am very scared. I know I could not have implants because I just could not cope with it I know that, is there any way if I lost a front tooth I could have a false one without drilling into my bone please? I’m also now ashamed to go to the dentist and it has been so long and my teeth are so bad.

Many thanks

Is it possible to get orthodontic braces if you have dental implants?

September 29th, 2013
Q.

Can orthodontic braces be used even if the person has dental implants in place of missing teeth? I have two implamts on my top jaw, after losing them due to an accident some time ago. They sit next to my two front teeth, which are what I would like to have corrected as they stick out horribly, drawing unwanted attention and comments all the time and just making my feel very self-conscious about how I look. Although I really want to have them straightened, I also do not want to risk the health of my two implants that have proved good so far, so do you think it is possible to have the Inman aligner without causing any damage? Thanks for your time.
