Can dental implants be used to chew hard food?

Q. I got three dental implants just over four months ago. There are no problems and they seem to be doing fine. Only, I find myself not eating food that is quite hard like apples. Am I worrying too much. Will the implant and connected crown be fine when chewing hard food or are there certain things I shoudl avoid?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the implants should be fine and i think it will just take time to build confidence in eating a chewing. hope this is helpful.

Is bone grafting performed before dental implants?

Q. Does the bone grafting procedure take part before going ahead with the implant of the dental implant but after extraction of tooth, or can it be done as part of appointment when dental implant is being put in? Do the gums need to be cut into or anything like that during the bone grafting?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the bone graft procedure is done in various ways dependant on the clinical situation.

1:some times is can be done at time of tooth extraction
2:sometimes it can be done at time of tooth extraction and immediate placement of the implant.
3:sometimes you have to wait for healing after the extraction to place the bone graft then wait for this to heal before the implant is placed.

the best advice i can give is discuss this with your implant surgeon.

hope this is helpful.

Why is the bone grafting procedure needed?

Q. I have been researching the dental implant treatment and have come across what is called the bone graft, where bone is taken from another area of the body to supplement the jaw bone, I think. Why would this be necessary? What reason would there be for the bone not being right in the jaw?
A. hi many thanks for your email, in most circumstances when a tooth is lost from the jaw, the biggest problem is the bone supporting the tooth shrinks, if this shrinkage occurs sometimes the remaning bone is not wide enough or high enough to then accomodate a dental implant. at this point if the patient still wants an implant in the site the only option would be to do a bone graft. hope this is helpful.

What are abutments as part of dental implant procedure?

Q. I am down to get dental implants but my dentist has mentioned something about abutments? At the time I got the gist of what they were but I was hoping you could refresh my memory?
A. the abutment is the bit in the middle that joins the bit in the bone (the implant) with what ever is in the mouth ie the crown

Treatment available for missing front lower teeth?

Q. I have not got any lower back teeth only 5 front teeth, and one on the end has snapped off, the next one to it is only part of the tooth as my last dentist drilled it for some reason. I cannot go around without my front lower teeth. What is the best way to go….is it possible to have a bridge??
A. hi many thanks for your email, the options are as follows:

1:denture which could replace the front teeth but also the back however it is removable.
2:bridge, if possible will require the preparation of the existing teeth and will only replace gaps between teeth.
3:implants, however the gap areas will need to be assessed for bone quanity and quality.

hope this is helpful.

Can dental implants secure denture?

Q. I have a denture and have done so for quite some time now. I have never felt all that comfortable with it but over time got used to it enough to get by. Now, I am contemplating getting dental implants as I have read that they can help to keep the dentures firmly in place, which mine has never felt like. How is it that they are able to do this and what would this involve? Also, would I be able to use the same denture?
A. Dentures can have better retention by using dental implants. Attachments to the dentures such as locators, magnets , ball attachments , bars can provide this. I tend to prefer bars or locators or both.

An example of a case i treated is the following

You would require a new denture.

i hope this helps

Do implants cause bone to weaken?

Q. I have a question about dental implants – do these cause the bone to weaken? I ask because it seems like drilling something into the bone will have the same effect as drilling holes into wood, causing it to crack a bit? Is there any possibility of this kind of thing or is my mind just thinking a bit too much about the problems?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the drilling of the site is simliar to drilling a piece of wood, you would not place a wider screw in the wood than the width of the wood, therfore as long as the screw being placed is supported by enough bone around the whole wood strength is not compromised. infact the whole thing as a unit is stronger. hope this is helpful.
