Dentist told me I am not a candidate for implants. Any advice?

Q. Hi, I recently visited my new dentist and he has told me that, due to smoking (quit 12 months ago)and using nicotine gum I will not be a good candidate for implants. I think that I would need bone grafts too but he says that because of my history of smoking my chance of failure is so high that he will not even talk about it. All he has told me is that he will GUARANTEE that I will lose a few more teeth in the near future! HELP!!!,
A. Hi If you would like to book in for a consultation, so i can help, please contact reception on 01509 23 11 44.

  • Dr. H. Ryan Kazemi says:

Although smoking is a risk factor for post operative infections and poor healing (with any procedure), it is not an absolute contraindication for implants. I’ve placed them successfully in many patients who smoke but I recommend the following: Stop smoking several days before surgery and at least for two weeks after surgery during the initial healing phase. I do advise patients to quit for long term oral health in general.
