Will smoking effect chance of implant survival?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
Is smoking something that will not only harm implant if I was to do so when the thing was being implanted, or is smoking still likely to cause damage if I do so when the implant has been in for a while? I know that generally smoking is not a good thing but what effect will it have on implant?

What temporary options are there for missing tooth?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
I managed to get my front tooth knocked out and now I am walking around with what looks like a missing piano key in my teeth. Dental implants seem like the best option but can you tell me if I will be able to wear a temporary tooth in between getting the implant in and then a proper tooth attached? I don’t want to keep walking around like this for too long?

Is it essential to replace missing teeth?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
I am pretty much all set to get a dental implant in a month. I have not paid for it yet and am now having second thoughts. The missing tooth in question is toward the back of the mouth and can not be seen. Could you possibly tell me if it is essential to get a missing tooth replaced if there are no real problems? Would there be any consequences at leaving a gap where there should be a tooth or is just aesthetic?

Can dental implants be used to chew hard food?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
I got three dental implants just over four months ago. There are no problems and they seem to be doing fine. Only, I find myself not eating food that is quite hard like apples. Am I worrying too much. Will the implant and connected crown be fine when chewing hard food or are there certain things I shoudl avoid?

Is bone grafting performed before dental implants?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
Does the bone grafting procedure take part before going ahead with the implant of the dental implant but after extraction of tooth, or can it be done as part of appointment when dental implant is being put in? Do the gums need to be cut into or anything like that during the bone grafting?

Why is the bone grafting procedure needed?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
I have been researching the dental implant treatment and have come across what is called the bone graft, where bone is taken from another area of the body to supplement the jaw bone, I think. Why would this be necessary? What reason would there be for the bone not being right in the jaw?
