How many implants are needed to support a denture?

Q. I currently have a full denture for my upper mouth – can you tell me how many implants I would need to get tot hold it in place more firm? An implant denture is a good way to make them less movable I have read so I am hoping this is achievable?
A. Hi

For the upper, I always recommend 4 as a minimum, but the more implants you have the better. There are also other factors which have to be taken into account before deciding on the number of impants. This would be discussed after clinical and radiographic examination. I hope this helps.

Is it necessary to have gum treatment before getting implants?

Q. I am in my 50s and even though i take good care of my teeth and don’t drink things like red wine one tooth is on its way out and this has been confirmed by my dentist. she has recommended an implant to me and she said the gums may need some work but cna you advise on whether this treatment is right and any other advice would be helpful.
A. Hi

If you have gum disease, then you would require this treated prior to implant placement. It is very important to have healthy gums as this could affect the prognosis of the implant.

Should I have tooth removed as it is far back in my mouth?

Q. A tooth toward the back of my mouth needed to be removed which I was not all that happy with. But it is not noticeable when I talk or smile as it is so far back in my mouth. My dentist has recommended a dental implant but I am unsure whether it is really necessary? If there is just one tooth missing and I don’t need it to improve the look of my smile is it essential to get it done?
A. Hi thanks for your question.

If a tooth is removed then the remaining teeth around it will begin to move over time to fill in the space.  This can be in the form of adjacent teeth tipping which can make them difficult to keep clean or teeth that would normally bite together overerupt which can cause problems with the bite and could potentally lead to other problems.

It’s really up to you whether or not you want to leave the space there.  As long as you know all the reasons for filling the space and have all the options available to you, such as implant, denture, bridge?

Have a discussion with your dentist and I’m sure they’ll be able to answer all your questions.

I hope that this helps.

Can i have an implant for single tooth to replace denture?

Q. i have been wearing dentures for a long time but now i want to have an implant it single teeth please advice options
A. Hi .

Thanks for your question.

Dental Implants are possibly an option for you.  You would need to have a consultation with a dentist who would be able to assess your potential suitablility and discuss the options with you.

Implants can be used to provide additional support for dentures or indeed provide fixed teeth replacement for dentures.

I hope that this helps

Can I have implants to replace decayed teeth?

Q. My teeth are in a dreary state and are in desperate need of treatment. This is due o years as a child of drinking loads of sugary drinks and then sadly a bout of drug abuse in my late teens but I am now clean from the stuff for 4 years and have not looked back since. Sasdly the damage has already been done to my teeth. My dentist told me whitening would make little difference and thehy are more or les crumbling away so i AM HOPING implants are the right choice for me. This is really affecting my confidence so I am hopeful you can help me.
A. It is impossible to give advice about specific situations without reviewing your condition, but in general terms dental implants may be of help to you in your treatment

Can I be treated under anaesthetic as I am scared of the dentist?

Q. Would I be able to have two teeth extracted that are decayed and have an implant or two inserted under general anaesthetic? I am very scared of the dentist and have had panic attacks in the past when having dental treatment but is there any hope for me?
A. You could have the treatment in a dental practice under sedation but not a general anaesthetic, sedation does effectively the same thing but is much safer. Let me know if you’d like more help I would be happy to see you at my clinic in Essex for a full consultation.

What is your advice about getting implants abroad?

Q. Whgat is your advice on getting dental implantss abroad dr glover? i am weighing up the pros and cons but need more help i think in what i think is a quite invsaive tretment?
A. Hi Thanks for your question.

Personally I wouldn’t have any medical or dental treatment carried out abroad unless it was an emergency.

It’s important to consider that dental implants are a surgical procedure requiring multiple appointments and complete treatment time can be several months.  You also need to consider after care of the treatment.  What would happen if something goes wrong?  You may find that your own dentist will not be able to help if there is a problem or it can be very expensive to have a problem rectified.

It’s important to be sure of the qualifications and experience of the person who is going to carry out your treatment and that they are using a reputable implant system as well.

I hope that this gives you a little more insight.

Regards.

What cost will bone augmentation add to implants?

Q. Hi, I have just decided (after a 3 yr decision process) to have dental implants but I have now been told that I will need bone augmentation. What does this mean to me in terms of cost, recovery time and failure of the implants. Many thanks.
A. Augmentation will increase the cost from £300-1200 in most cases depending on the amount required to rebuild. Recovery time is increased and there is a slight increase in failure of the implant.
