How long before I know implant is a success?

September 27th, 2010
Q.
I have had one of my teeth removed and will be getting a dental implant when the gums are healed. What I am wondering is how long it will be before I know the dental implant is okay and I am beyond the point of it being ‘rejected’?

Okay to get implant if have rheumatoid arthritis?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
I have rheumatoid arthritis which can lead to osteoporosis. Can this affect a full set implant? I had an infection in front lower tooth and a ‘shadow’ across the other front teeth. The hospital cut through the bone to remove infection, but it returned and my dentist decided to remove all 4 teeth, leaving me with a denture. I have problems with remaining back teeth, and a loose crown, which holds the denture. I already have trouble with the denture and as I have a shallow jaw, I don’t see how a full denture would stay in place. He has suggested implants. I am worried if the Rheumatoid Arthritis and various future medications plus the removal of bone from front teeth will have an effect on implants.

Will smoking effect chance of implant survival?

September 24th, 2010
Q.
Is smoking something that will not only harm implant if I was to do so when the thing was being implanted, or is smoking still likely to cause damage if I do so when the implant has been in for a while? I know that generally smoking is not a good thing but what effect will it have on implant?

Do implants cause bone to weaken?

September 23rd, 2010
Q.
I have a question about dental implants – do these cause the bone to weaken? I ask because it seems like drilling something into the bone will have the same effect as drilling holes into wood, causing it to crack a bit? Is there any possibility of this kind of thing or is my mind just thinking a bit too much about the problems?

Do symptoms point to infection of dental implant?

September 19th, 2010
Q.
Two weeks ago I finally had my dental implant put in. I stuck to all the dentist’s instructions what with salt water to rinse mouth and medication, but still managed to get red sweling around the area. From what I have read up on it would seem that the implant has failed and I have made an appointment within the next few days. Does this kind of thing happen often? Is it likely to happen again if I get the implant done again? How long will it take for the gum to recover from this?
