My jaw bone is weak due to cancer therapy, what can I do to get implants?

Q. I had tobgue cancer about 6 years ago and it has resulted in losing my tongue and 1/2 of my bottom teeth removed. My bottom jaw bone was cut during surgery and then screwed back together. The screws came out a year later, through my face. Presently, my jaw has shifted as well as all my remaining teeth. I look very odd. I have thought about implants but I was told my bone can’t hold them due to radiation. Is there anything you can do or even know of anything that can be done to improve my “looks”. I realize how lucky I am to be here 5 years after this diagnosis, but I would like to look a little bit more normal than I do right now. I have alot of support from family and friends but would like to do this for myself. Thank you for your imput.

A. Implants can be very problematic in irradiated bone so you should seek advice from your oral surgeon. However after 5 years you might now be a candidate and may even receive the treatment on the NHS. I would speak to your oral surgeon and see what they can offer you in the way of reconstructive surgery
