Dentist said they wouldn’t do implant because I smoke. Is giving up smoking the only option?

August 1st, 2011
Q.
My front tooth is beyond disrepair or so my dentist has told me. It is very loose though and I think it is only a matter of time. I asked the dentist about the possibility of implants but he said no because I smoke. I asked whether another dentist would do it if I went to them but he was adamant that they wouldn\’t. Is the only reasonable option for me to do my best to give up smoking if I want to have this treatment?,

My implant failed and no one seems able to give me practical advice. What should I do?

July 16th, 2011
Q.
I had 3 Bicon implants at LL5 & 6 and LR4. The latter failed within days. The other two survived. However, after they were crowned recently I began to smell a rat because dentist would not show me post-implant x-rays. Long story short, LL6 is half in-half out, hence the reason for the odd sensation, and another dentist has confirmed that it will fail. There is also a 6mm pocket there, which I believe will aid further bone loss. After many years regular crowns failed and they were not replaced by anything. My upper jaw has enough depth apparently but ridge is too narrow. What to do? No one seems able to give me practical advice. I am 59.,

Why did implant fail? Am I allergic?

July 15th, 2011
Q.
My dental implant on my anterior #9 has failed. The implant was originally placed in my mouth roughly 5-7 years ago. I do not smoke, and I take very good care of my teeth. I recently went back to go see my periodontist due to puss and infrequent bleeding of the implant gum tissue. The puss and bleeding in the gum could not be controlled no matter what I tried. I went back to my periodontist to try and fix this situation, but unfortunately the implant could not be saved. My periodontist says the implant failed due to a breakdown of the hydroxyapatite coating on the implant. He tells me that the breakdown of the hydroxyapatite coating on the implant caused an allergic reaction that lead to the degeneration of the bone in the infected area, and thus causing the inflamed tissue. When the implant was removed, he said that there was no bone left in the area, and that the implant was held in place by inflammed tissue. I have recently had a bone graft done, and will likely need another one. My questions are this: How do I know for sure this is the reason that the implant failed? Or was I allergic to the implant metal itself? Or was it something else? Is there a test I can require him to perform to find out what I am allergic to? How do I know that the next implant wont have the same issue? Being that my implant is in the very front of my mouth, I am very insecure about the way it looks. Is another implant still the best option for my situation? Or is a bridge a better option for my case? My periodontist isn\’t keen on doing a bridge because the two teeth on either side of the area have never been touched, or even had a cavity. It would mean filing down to perfectly healthy teeth. Please help. I feel lost and I am not sure what I should do next.,

The whole of my lower jaw has been in pain since the implant, why is this?

July 2nd, 2011
Q.
I had an implant two weeks ago which was not too painful but since then my whole lower jaw on one side has hurt and co-codamol only just keep it at bay. The implant surgeon has taken the stitches out and suggested waiting another 3 weeks to see if the pain subsides. He has done x rays to check all seems OK,
