I have not been to the dentist in years because I am petrified of my dentist. Can you help?

September 29th, 2013
Q.

I am absolutely petrified of a dentist consequently have not been for years and my teeth are now loose. I don’t know what to do and am very scared. I know I could not have implants because I just could not cope with it I know that, is there any way if I lost a front tooth I could have a false one without drilling into my bone please? I’m also now ashamed to go to the dentist and it has been so long and my teeth are so bad.

Many thanks

Could I get dental implants as an alternative to my current denture?

September 22nd, 2013
Q.

I am missing my bottom teeth on both sides from my eye teeth with the exception of one wisdom tooth on my left. I am 31 and this has been the case for over 10+ years however, recently i have started to have some real problems with my jaw with painful symptoms and an occassion where almost lock jaw which really scared me and made me anxious. My dentist has given me a denture but I feel too young for this kind of treatment and would like to try something different. Whats the minimum amount of implants i would need to get a bridge?

I’m considering implants but have a number of problems that might affect this, will i still be able to achieve a good mouth profile?

August 19th, 2013
Q.

I am currently considering implants on my upper jaw along with sinus lift/bone graft. I still have some baby teeth which need removing, and some of the sound adult teeth will be crowned and a fixed bridge will be fitted on implants I currently wear a upper denture which covers my existing teeth and obviously gives fullness in my mouth. I have recently been treated for the periodontal problem. I know this is a complex case, but I would like to know whether I can achieve a fairly good lip/mouth profile after as when I remove the denture I am really flat mouthed. I look forward to hearing from you.

I’ve had my tooth removed because of an abscess, will the abscess heal up on it’s own now or do i need antibiotics?

August 19th, 2013
Q.

Dear Dr Moore,
I had a filling fall out quite some time ago, stupidly I left it like this and my tooth eroded away leaving only a small amount visible. Yesterday I noticed a slight swelling on the gum above the tooth I phoned my dentist and they seen me today and removed the tooth. What I don’t understand is if this is the end of the problem? Will the abscess just go away by itself now the rotten tooth has been removed. I am pregnant and do not want any infection to harm my baby. Should I have been given antibiotics or will I be ok just gargling salt water and keeping the area clean as my dentist instructed me to do.
Thank you for your help!

My 14 year old daughter has a front impacted tooth and wants to have a dental implant, is this possible?

August 12th, 2013
Q.

My daughter has front impacted tooth – she has decided she does not want to wait another 2 years for tooth to possibly come down and have an implant instead – can you advise if this is possible and the procedure. So far she just has the chain fitted. Her impacted tooth is way up under her nose lying horizontally and we have been told that the procedure to pull down may not be a success. She has had teeth removed as some other front teeth out of place. She is 14 and the absence of a front tooth is having major impact. NHS have been good but process too slow and she is prepared to do anything to have a front tooth asap.
Thanks

I had two veneers fitted in March 2011, recently one flipped off and the surgery refuse to replace it, what should i do?

August 12th, 2013
Q.

Dear Dr Moore,

I had two porcelain veneers fitted in March 2011 at a cost of £900. Last Thursday one flipped off and I returned to the dentist where I was told by that they could fix it but I would need to contact the dentist who fitted the veneer (he no longer works at the surgery) to get it replaced. She said that as he fitted the veneer it’s his responsibility to fix it. I questioned this as it seemed unreasonable as I had the treatment at the surgery, not through the dentist privately. The owner of the surgery then said that ‘these things happen’ and he wouldn’t be able to replace the veneer for free. Having paid out £900 and being told at the time the veneers would last between 8-10 years this doesn’t seem right.

The fixed veneer has now flipped off again after being bonded back on so it clearly needs a more long term resolution.

Can you please tell me what you think I am entitled to as a patient? I feel that if I bought a TV and it broke within 18 months I would be covered by a guarantee so surely the same is the case for veneers?

Thanks!

My Maryland bridge has fallen out 3 times in the last 3 years, what are my other options?

August 1st, 2013
Q.

I have a bridge (I believe it’s called a Maryland bridge) due to losing a tooth, mainly through grinding my teeth in my sleep. I initially had a crown but ended up needing the whole tooth removed and a bridge was my only option. I’ve had it approximately 3 years and it has fallen out and been re-attached 3 times so far. At the moment it’s causing me a lot of pain and I can feel it loosening, ready to fall out again. I assume this is due to grinding my teeth, although on one occasion it did come out when I was eating. I’m concerned that this is just going to keep happening and I’m wondering what my options are. I’m also not really happy with the appearance of the bridge, the tooth doesn’t blend in well enough with the others and you can see that it’s false. I’ve been reading about implants however it seems these can also be damaged by teeth grinding? I understand you may well need to see the tooth, but I’m just wondering what your initial thoughts on this would be and what advice you can offer. Many thanks.
