Can implants be used when several teeth are missing?

October 9th, 2010
Q.
Are dental implants just for cases where there are a few teeth missing or can they be used in cases like mine where there are all but 6 teeth missing. That is combining top and bottom?

How long does the dental implant need to be left before a tooth can be fitted to it? I have not had my dental implant yet but would just like to know. Can this time vary for people or is ther a set time limit?

Would implants pose a risk as I have hypoparathyroidism?

October 7th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Moore I am a 54 year old male and have several teeth missing on the lower left and upper right jaw and am now considering having implants. As a teenager I was diagnosed with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and require a daily dose of Vit D and calcium. I have also been told that I have oral lichen planus and in the past I have had quite a lot of problems with oral candidiasis, mouth ulcers and a sore tongue. These problems have lessened since 2000, when I had some amalgam fillings removed and made changes to my diet. In light of the above, do you think that having implants poses a particular risk? If I have implants, would you advise me to consider all-ceramic implants? Finally, can you suggest who I might contact for treatment in the UK? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me with this.

Why is dental implant procedure so long?

October 7th, 2010
Q.
Why is that the dental implant procedure takes so long? I mean, from what I have read it all takes about four months which seems like a rteally long time for some dental work. So, could you tell me why please?

How will the dentist find out if I need bone grafting before I can go ahead with getting my dental implant? Will it purely be an x-ray or something else?
